Summary:
Function & Scope: To plan, direct, and supervise a major unit engage in research, investigation, or other technical operations. Responsible for the direction of a major research program.
Essential Functions:
Typical Essential Functions include but are not limited to the following:
- Prepares proposals to supporting agencies.
- Acts a liaison officer between agencies and research department.
- Selects key research personnel.
- Determines results desired by the project, suggests procedures to be used to attain desired results.
- Coordinates and reviews the work of research staff.
- Submits project results to departmental director.
Marginal Functions:
Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervision:
Received: Receives general instructions on procedures for initiating and directing a special research project.
Given: Instructs key members of staff regarding goals desired and possible methods or procedures to use in achieving these goals.
Education:
Required: Ph.D. with major course work in field of assignment.

Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge to use and design specialized research equipment as required by the projects.

If this is a supervisory position, the incumbent is expected to complete required supervisory training; orient, train and develop subordinates; provide appropriate coaching, guidance and supervision to subordinates; and complete annual performance evaluations.

Responsible for duties as assigned relating to internal controls including safe-guarding of department assets, reliability of department financial information, and compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
Any qualifications to be considered as equivalents, in lieu of stated minimums, require the prior written approval of the Assistant Vice President, Human Resources Management.
