Summary:
Function & Scope: To perform engineering or scientific duties requiring special qualifications or attainments with a wide latitude for independent action and decision. Responsible for complex or unusual research assignments requiring the development of new or improved techniques and procedures.
Essential Functions:
Typical Essential Functions include but are not limited to the following:
- Plans, schedules, and coordinates detailed phases of one or more parts of a research project.
- Devises new approaches to problems encountered.
- Supervises and assists in the preparation of specifications.
- Assumes responsibility for acceptance or rejection of results achieved.
Marginal Functions:
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Assists in the preparation of project reports.
Supervision:
Received: Only in terms of specific work objectives and critical issues as determined by project director.
Given: Supervises, coordinates, and reviews the work of a small staff of engineers or scientists and technicians.
Education:
Required: Master’s degree with major course work in field of assignment.
Preferred: N/A
Experience:
Required: Two years of related research experience.
Preferred: N/A
Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of special equipment used in the field of research.
Special Job Requirements (such as hours, accuracy, special equipment and/or working conditions):
Very good office working conditions. Sometimes requires working with hazardous equipment or materials.
Other:
If this is a supervisory position, the incumbent is expected to complete required supervisory training; orient, train and develop subordinates; provide appropriate coaching, guidance and supervision to subordinates; and complete annual performance evaluations.

Responsible for duties as assigned relating to internal controls including safe-guarding of department assets, reliability of department financial information, and compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
Any qualifications to be considered as equivalents, in lieu of stated minimums, require the prior written approval of the Assistant Vice President, Human Resources Management.
