Summary:
Function & Scope: To perform highly skilled and technical supervisory work involving the construction, operation and maintenance of specialized equipment relating to a scientific or research activity. Responsible for supervising skilled and semi-skilled workers and personally participates in technical work of a highly specialized or non-standard nature.
Essential Functions:
Typical Essential Functions include but are not limited to the following:
- Supervises and assumes responsibility for building pre-production, model shop or prototype units of laboratory developed equipment.
- Develops modifications for improvement of existing equipment.
- Designs, plans, lays out, assigns and inspects work of subordinates in construction or major repair of specialized electrical, mechanical and optical apparatus.
Marginal Functions:
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Collaborates with Research Scientists, research engineers and faculty members, who may have overall supervision of research projects in the design and functional application of research apparatus.
Supervision:
Received: General supervision received of overall effectiveness of a particular work group.
Given: Close supervision of skilled and semi-skilled workers.
Education:
Required: High school graduation or GED, with vocational training in a related field.
Preferred: High school graduation or GED, supplemented by college-level courses in physics, electrical engineering and related courses.
Experience:
Required: Five years of experience in the skilled construction and maintenance of equipment or apparatus of the type related to the position. Skill in the use of standard laboratory/research equipment, shop machines, and measuring tools.
Preferred: More than nine years of above experience.
Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Standard laboratory/research equipment, shop machines, and measuring tools, computer and other office machines.
Special Job Requirements (such as hours, accuracy, special equipment and/or working conditions):
Proficiency in all phases of the duties performed. Normal shop or laboratory conditions. In some departments, service or scientific hazards may exist.
Other:
If this is a supervisory position, the incumbent is expected to complete required supervisory training; orient, train and develop subordinates; provide appropriate coaching, guidance and supervision to subordinates; and complete annual performance evaluations.
Specific job requirements or physical location of some positions allocated to this classification may render the position security sensitive; thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215 Texas Education Code.
Responsible for duties as assigned relating to internal controls including safe-guarding of department assets, reliability of department financial information, and compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
Any qualifications to be considered as equivalents, in lieu of stated minimums, require the prior written approval of the Assistant Vice President, Human Resources Management.
