Scientific Instrument Maker Supervisor

Summary:

Function & Scope: To provide shop supervision and highly skilled fabrication, assembly, and repair of complicated instruments and machines, normally used for scientific research, engineering, or teaching projects.

Essential Functions:

Typical Essential Functions include but are not limited to the following:

  • Assists scientists or engineers in blueprint design.
  • Interprets designs.
  • Drafts rough sketches for priority jobs and personally oversees completion within specified time limit.
  • Supervises all shop personnel and participates in manufacture of parts and equipment.
  • Plans and estimates times and material requirements.

Marginal Functions:

Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervision:

Received: Supervised by review of over-all effectiveness, ability to meet time limits and specifications.

Given: Supervises a number of Instrument Makers an d other technical personnel, giving verbal and written instructions and inspecting work during fabrication and following completion for possible variance from specifications.

Education:

Required: High school graduation supplemented by vocational machine shop and technical courses such as mathematic, physics, or blueprint reading.

Preferred: N/A

Experience:

Required: Five years of experience as a journeyman machinist or instrument maker with some supervisory background.

Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Required equipment – lathe, milling machine, shaper, planner, drill press, welding equipment, micrometers, and other precision measuring devices.

Special Job Requirements (such as hours, accuracy, special equipment and/or working conditions):

Accuracy in the inspection of the work of others and in the fabrication, etc. Usual machine, scientific, or engineering shop working conditions apply. Exposure to a variety of experimental laboratory shop conditions.

Other:

If this is a supervisory position, the incumbent is expected to complete required supervisory training; orient, train and develop subordinates; provide appropriate coaching, guidance and supervision to subordinates; and complete annual performance evaluations.

Specific job requirements or physical location of some positions allocated to this classification may render the position security sensitive; thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215 Texas Education Code.

Responsible for duties as assigned relating to internal controls including safe-guarding of department assets, reliability of department financial information, and compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures.

Any qualifications to be considered as equivalents, in lieu of stated minimums, require the prior written approval of the Assistant Vice President, Human Resources Management.
