Summary:
Function & Scope: To provide highly responsible technical and supervisory skills in carrying out various research projects. Responsible for coordinating procedures and performing technical laboratory duties in accordance with general and/or specific plans.

Essential Functions:
Typical Essential Functions include but are not limited to the following:
- Plans, coordinates, and supervises assigned research projects which may be limited in nature to a segment of a larger project.
- Exercises responsibility for project performance and accountability for progress, and/or personally performs advanced scientific research work
- Suggests modifications to, or improvements in, the design of research projects
- Presents original ideas for follow-up studies
- Recommends the utilization of new or revised techniques and procedures to obtain desired results
- Constructs, assembles, and operates experimental or other special-design laboratory apparatus and equipment.
- Assembles and analyzes research data, and assists in the preparation of material for reports or publication.
Marginal Functions:
Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervision:
Received: Work is performed under the minimum direction of Principal Investigator or research personnel of higher grade. Desired results are indicated in broad terms or objectives. Work methods or approaches to work problems are determined almost entirely by the incumbent who is virtually self-supervising because of technical or specialized knowledge and/or experience.
Given: May supervise lower level Research Technicians.
Education:
Required: Bachelor’s degree in one of the basic sciences.

Experience:
Required: Three years of experience in scientific or experimental research work.
Preferred: N/A
Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Thorough working knowledge of the various types of equipment used in the laboratory to which assigned.
Special Job Requirements (such as hours, accuracy, special equipment and/or working conditions):
Proficiency in all phases of work performed.
Other:
If this is a supervisory position, the incumbent is expected to complete required supervisory training; orient, train and develop subordinates; provide appropriate coaching, guidance and supervision to subordinates; and complete annual performance evaluations.
Specific job requirements or physical location of some positions allocated to this classification may render the position security sensitive; thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215 Texas Education Code.
Responsible for duties as assigned relating to internal controls including safe-guarding of department assets, reliability of department financial information, and compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
Any qualifications to be considered as equivalents, in lieu of stated minimums, require the prior written approval of the Assistant Vice President, Human Resources Management.
