Animal Resources Supervisor

Summary:

Function & Scope:

To provide responsible expertise in the care, feeding, transportation of experimental animals at the university. Also responsible for maintenance and monitoring of the Animal Care Facility. Prevents infections and/or disease in the animal colony by carefully cleaning and disinfecting equipment and the facility, and through close observation of animal behavior. Provides support to departments who participate in animal research.

Essential Functions:

Typical Essential Functions include but are not limited to the following:

  • Cleans & sterilizes cages & associated equipment.
  • Performs lead function by providing guidance and/or training to facility users and/or animal attendants.
  • Observes animals and reports changes in appearance or behavior.
  • Serves as a liaison between facility users and supervisors.
  • Serves as an information resource with regards to husbandry procedures, handling and restraining, and housing requirements of commonly used animals in research.
  • Responds to all emergency situations.
  • Reports any repair issues to supervisor.
  • Works on weekends and holidays.
  • Prepares equipment, instruments, linen, and surgery suite for procedures.
  • Cleans, disinfects, and maintains efficient orderly rooms in facility.
  • Maintains accurate records of all animals for billing.
  • Monitors all access to facility. Receives and identifies newly arrived equipment, bedding, and feed.
  • Checks all shipments of all new animals for count, sex, weight and general health signs.
  • Checks for any mechanical problems with equipment & facility.
  • Prevents any chemical spills.

Incumbent develops own ways to effectively perform a variety of duties or performs complex duties within established policy guidelines; responsible for a defined set of assignments, expected to determine and create procedures to set priorities and meet goals.

Required: High school degree or equivalent.

Preferred: N/A

 

Experience:

Required: Prior experience in working with experimental animals. Certification of the Animal Association of Laboratory Animal Sciences.

Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Excellent communication, verbal and writing skills. Multi-tasker with the ability to implement policies regarding animal care research. Extensive knowledge of ALAAC, OLAW, USDA, and NIH regulations.

Special Job Requirements (such as hours, accuracy, special equipment and/or working conditions):

Experience in supervising and training graduate and doctoral students.

Other:

If this is a supervisory position, the incumbent is expected to complete required supervisory training; orient, train and develop subordinates; provide appropriate coaching, guidance and supervision to subordinates; and complete annual performance evaluations.

Specific job requirements or physical location of some positions allocated to this classification may render the position security sensitive; thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215 Texas Education Code.

Responsible for duties as assigned relating to internal controls including safe-guarding of department assets, reliability of department financial information, and compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
