Superintendent, Construction/Maintenance

Summary:

Function & Scope: Will provide overall supervision of The University's Energy Management Services department.

Essential Functions:

Typical Essential Functions include but are not limited to the following:

  • Plan, assign and supervise work of utility station operators and electronic technicians in the operation of equipment which regulates the flow of heat, steam and air conditioning into buildings; direct preventative maintenance activities.
  • Supervise and participate in necessary repairs to equipment and instruments
  • Perform related duties as required.
  • Responsible for overall planning and management of UTD's Central Energy Plant and utility distribution system.
  • Review of construction/remodeling documents with regards to HVAC and Central Energy Plant issues.
  • Coordinates with other campus departments, such as Environmental Health and Safety, for related programs, with asbestos abatement and air quality as examples, as they pertain to University facility projects.
  • Maintains an effective relationship with external, regulatory, contractual and other agencies as required.
  • Working conditions include work performed in an office environment, but much of the work is performed with on-site inspections which could include working in mechanical/electrical spaces, under buildings, on rooftops, in tunnels and construction/renovation projects and exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards.
  • Expected to respond to after-hours emergencies on campus.
  • Infrequent overnight travel

Received: General supervision-Incumbent develops own ways to effectively perform a variety of duties or performs complex duties within established policy guidelines; responsible for a defined set of assignments expected to determine and create procedures to set priorities and meet goals.

Given: Supervises Energy Plant staff directly and through subordinate foremen.            

Education:

Required: Bachelor's degree in engineering or 7 years related experience in the operation and maintenance of steam generating, power generating, refrigeration and/or data acquisition equipment, or an equivalent combination or education and experience.

Required: Bachelor's degree in engineering or 7 years related experience in the operation and maintenance of steam generating, power generating, refrigeration and/or data acquisition equipment, or an equivalent combination or education and experience. 2 years supervisory experience.

Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Valid Texas drivers license; strong analytical and computer skills; excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to work effectively with faculty, staff and students.

If this is a supervisory position, the incumbent is expected to complete required supervisory training; orient, train and develop subordinates; provide appropriate coaching, guidance and supervision to subordinates; and complete annual performance evaluations.
