Drafting Technician

Summary:

Function & Scope: To provide highly advanced technical drafting skills. Responsible for overall planning and direction of a drafting section, and for performance of skilled mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, architectural drafting duties.

Essential Functions:

Typical Essential Functions include but are not limited to the following:

  • Prepares construction drawings for architectural, mechanical, and electrical projects, including new construction, renovation, modifications, repairs, etc.
  • Maintains, updates and distributes floor plans of all campus buildings; maintains and updates changes in the room numbering system and changes in square footage records.
  • Organizes and maintains library of drawings and specifications.
  • Makes project cost estimates when help is needed in this area.
  • Monitors performance of and effects repair action and updating on CAD drafting equipment.

Marginal Functions:

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Produces copies of drawings via blue line machine.
  • Assists in the preparation of statistical data, reports, inventory, etc., as required.

Supervision:

Received: General instruction from the Associate Director as to what is desired, but ideally work is performed independently with minimal supervision.

Given: May by assigned supervisory duties by Associate Director.

Education:

Required: High school graduation supplemented by trade or vocational school with courses in drafting or mechanical drawing.

Preferred: N/A

Experience:

Required: Five years experience in architectural or mechanical engineering design drafting.

Preferred: N/A

Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Must be experienced in and capable of performing drafting by CAD machine. Ability to prepare drawings accurately from oral instructions, rough sketches, and notes. Ability to grasp abstract technical concepts and translate them into drawings. Ability to organize work load and to manage a large number of projects concurrently, with accuracy and speed. Ability to successfully interface with a large spectrum of people pursuant to achieving objectives on time.

Special Job Requirements (such as hours, accuracy, special equipment and/or working conditions):

Sitting, standing, walking, climbing, occasional moderate lifting, use of eyes and hands in the operation of computer and drafting equipment. Ability to cope simultaneously with a heavy work load, constantly changing project requirements, and very difficult deadlines. Office type environment mixed with some outdoor activity and exposure to weather and physical hazards. Some exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards.

Other:

If this is a supervisory position, the incumbent is expected to complete required supervisory training; orient, train and develop subordinates; provide appropriate coaching, guidance and supervision to subordinates; and complete annual performance evaluations.

Specific job requirements or physical location of some positions allocated to this classification may render the position security sensitive; thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215 Texas Education Code.

Responsible for duties as assigned relating to internal controls including safe-guarding of department assets, reliability of department financial information, and compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures.

Any qualifications to be considered as equivalents, in lieu of stated minimums, require the prior written approval of the Assistant Vice President, Human Resources Management.
