Communications Technician

Summary:

Function & Scope: To provide journey-level skills in the installation, repair, and maintenance of communications equipments and peripherals. Responsible for determining work procedures and methods in accordance with standard trade practice and departmental standards.

Essential Functions:

Typical Essential Functions include but are not limited to the following:

  • Installs, maintains, and repairs telephones and telecommunications equipment.
  • Tests equipment and repairs cables.
  • Plans for installation of new equipment.
  • Installs telephone cable in new buildings.
  • Uses various testing devices to locate trouble and evaluates current voltage and resistances.
  • Reads schematic diagrams in repairing and installing equipment and reads blueprints in installing cabling and telephones.
  • Programs telephone switch database.
  • Builds and maintains cable records.
  • Works with data communications technicians as needed.
  • Assists in preventive maintenance.

Marginal Functions:

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Maintains loop balance in switch.
  • Installs software upgrades and special applications software.
  • Installs and maintains station and circuit cards.
  • Maintains call accounting system.

Supervision:

Received: General instruction and review from Telecommunications Specialists.

Given: May supervise work of semi-skilled employees.

Education:

Required: High school graduate.

Preferred: N/A

Experience:

Required: Five years experience in telecommunications. UTD telephone system certified.

Preferred: N/A

Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Familiarity with all installation, testing and calibration equipment required for the operation and maintenance of a large digital PBX telephone system.

Special Job Requirements (such as hours, accuracy, special equipment and/or working conditions):

Accuracy in the use of tools and equipment of the trade. Usual telecommunications environment. Should be able to work with others in a cooperative manner under stressful conditions.

Other:

If this is a supervisory position, the incumbent is expected to complete required supervisory training; orient, train and develop subordinates; provide appropriate coaching, guidance and supervision to subordinates; and complete annual performance evaluations.

Specific job requirements or physical location of some positions allocated to this classification may render the position security sensitive; thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215 Texas Education Code.

Responsible for duties as assigned relating to internal controls including safe-guarding of department assets, reliability of department financial information, and compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
