Irrigation Technician

Summary:

Function & Scope: To provide skills in the performance of work on irrigation systems and equipment.  Responsible for the installation, inspection, and maintenance of irrigation systems and equipment.

Essential Functions:

Typical Essential Functions include but are not limited to the following:

  • Repairs piping of all types, including copper, p.v.c., galvanized and iron.

  • Installs and repairs electric solenoid valves.

  • Installs irrigation systems. 

  • Maintains existing irrigation systems by making periodic inspections and necessary repairs.

  • Fine tunes systems to optimum operating potentials.

  • Takes necessary actions to prevent problems such as water run-off.

  • Lifts, pushes and pulls up to 50 pounds.

  • Will care for/maintain 350 electric valves on university campus; manage 50 miles of pipe and 1000s of irrigation heads.

  •  Troubleshoot electrical controllers.

  • Program various irrigation controllers.

  • Provide general irrigation repair.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervision:

Received: Specific Supervision:  Incumbent performs standard and routine assignments independently to conclusion; unusual problems and exceptions to procedures or processes are referred to the supervisor.visor.

Given: May supervise the work of assigned staff.

Education:

Required: High school graduation or GED.

Preferred: None.

Experience:

Required: Two years of experience performing semi-skilled maintenance and repair work in irrigation fields.

Preferred: Prior irrigation systems and equipment experience.

Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to use tools of the trade in which work is performed.

Special Job Requirements (such as hours, accuracy, special equipment and/or working conditions):

Valid TX drivers license. TX Irrigation license.

If this is a supervisory position, the incumbent is expected to complete required supervisory training; orient, train and develop subordinates; provide appropriate coaching, guidance and supervision to subordinates; and complete annual performance evaluations.

Specific job requirements or physical location of some positions allocated to this classification may render the position security sensitive; thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215 Texas Education Code.

Responsible for duties as assigned relating to internal controls including safe-guarding of department assets, reliability of department financial information, and compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
