Summary:

Function & Scope: To provide the necessary management skills to assist in the direction of the police department staff of a component of The University of Texas System. Responsible for administrative and supervisory enforcement duties involving general and criminal regulations and institutional rules and regulations in order to provide for the protection, safety, and welfare of students, employees and property within the areas under the control and jurisdiction of The University of Texas System Police.

DUTIES

Typical: Plans, organizes, and supervises police department activities; checks performance, appearance, and conduct of commissioned and non-commissioned police department personnel; gives advice and instruction concerning unusual phases of work; makes evaluation of subordinates' work; interviews and tests applicants for positions with the department; instructs in university police training programs; makes evaluations and analyses concerning accomplishments of objectives; makes recommendations to the Chief, University Police Department; prepares and reviews various reports; assists in the preparation of the annual budget; confers with local law enforcement agencies, court officials, government officials, and other officials on matters of mutual interest; assists local police agencies in serving warrants on property within the areas under the control and jurisdiction of The University of Texas System; on occasion, serves as the Chief of Police and commands the department in the absence of the Chief; performs related duties as assigned.

Periodic: Speaks to groups and organizations interested in traffic, security, and criminal law enforcement.

SUPERVISION

Received: General supervision from the Chief, University Police Department.

Given: General supervision to all members of the University Police Department staff.

EDUCATION

Required: Possess a Baccalaureate Degree in Law Enforcement or a related field. Appointment will be made by the Chief of the University Police Department. In accordance with the current levels of educational attainment for commissioned police officers of The University of Texas System as adopted by the Board of Regents.

EXPERIENCE

Required: Have five years experience as a commissioned police officer with a recognized law enforcement agency, including investigative and supervisory experience. Possess Instructor and Advanced Certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education. Appointment will be made by the Chief of the University Police Department.

Preferred: The required experience performed as a member of the University Police Department.

EQUIPMENT

Required: Must be proficient with the operation of all equipment utilized by the University Police Department necessary to perform assigned tasks.

ACCURACY

Proficiency in all phases of duties performed.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Usual: Occasional exposure to outside weather conditions. Work involves a degree of hazard.

OTHER

Must hold a Peace Officer Commission with The University of Texas System and a valid Texas driver's license. Must be in excellent physical condition.

Any qualifications to be considered as equivalents, in lieu of stated minimums, require the prior approval of the Director of Police, The University of Texas System.

Required: None

Preferred: High school graduation or GED.

Experience:

Required: Six months of experience in custodial maintenance work.

Preferred: More than one year of experience in custodial maintenance work.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of cleaning and janitorial methods and materials. Knowledge of, and the ability to use, janitorial equipment and supplies. Ability to perform heavy physical labor as required. Ability to accurately perform all phases of duties assigned. Ability to read English.

If this is a supervisory position, the incumbent is expected to complete required supervisory training; orient, train and develop subordinates; provide appropriate coaching, guidance and supervision to subordinates; and complete annual performance evaluations.

Responsible for duties as assigned relating to internal controls including safe-guarding of department assets, reliability of department financial information, and compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
