Summary:
Function & Scope: To provide skilled technical work and knowledge in organizing, directing, and maintaining the fire prevention and safety programs. Responsible for aiding the administration of the fire prevention and safety programs of the Institution under general supervision. Responsible for making periodic inspections in all parts of the Institution to accumulate data from which fire prevention and fire emergency programs can be practical and from which a safety program can be maintained.
Essential Functions:
Typical Essential Functions include but are not limited to the following:
- Meets with the public fire and safety officials to obtain the latest information and/or procedures in safety methods.
- Inspects all facilities for hazards and proposes alternate procedures and equipment to reduce these hazards.
- Conducts safety training programs.
- Arranges for maintenance of safety equipment.
- Investigates and analyzes accident reports, fire reports, and proposes corrective actions.
- Must meet with Department Heads to discuss items that do not meet the fire and safety standards.
- Periodically observes working procedures of personnel to insure proper utilization of equipment and to insure safe working procedures.
- Acts as Assistant Chairperson of University Safety Committee.
- Investigates and reports on causes of fire.
- Informs City Fire Department personnel on construction, type and designs of buildings and similar matters of importance in fighting fires.
- Supervises and assists in annual inventory of fire protection equipment.

Required: High school graduation.

Experience:
Required: Five years of experience in fire prevention and protection work including work in industrial safety programs.

Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must have a working knowledge of up-to-date fire prevention and safety tools. Must have working knowledge of building construction and repair, fire extinguishers, arson investigation and public relations. Exposure to outside weather conditions, and moderate physical activity, including walking, stooping, and stair climbing. Exposure to research and experimentation hazards involving mechanical, electrical, chemical, fire and radiation during inspections in some buildings.

If this is a supervisory position, the incumbent is expected to complete required supervisory training; orient, train and develop subordinates; provide appropriate coaching, guidance and supervision to subordinates; and complete annual performance evaluations.

Responsible for duties as assigned relating to internal controls including safe-guarding of department assets, reliability of department financial information, and compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
Any qualifications to be considered as equivalents, in lieu of stated minimums, require the prior written approval of the Assistant Vice President, Human Resources Management.
