New Employee Orientation

Description: New Employee Orientation provides an introduction to and overview of UT Dallas. During the session, participants will learn about the history, mission and values of UTD. Important policies will be discussed as well as the insurance and retirement programs in which eligible employees may enroll. Employee's are encouraged to bring information on the persons they wish to list as beneficiaries (i.e. names, addresses, social security numbers and dates of birth). A box lunch is provided for all who have been registered (see below).

Target Audience: Open to all new benefit eligible staff and faculty. Participants who drive to the Facilities Management building are encouraged to car pool. Parking is limited.

Registration: There is no open registration for New Employee Orientation. Staff and Faculty should work with their departments to register for New Employee Orientation. All registrations must be in to Human Resources a week in advance of the scheduled session. Normally New Employee Orientation is offered on the first, third and fifth Tuesday of each month, but during the months of August and September we offer Orientation weekly. Financial Information Systems (FINS) Training – Level 1—Tuesday, November 10th from 2-4 pm, Odessa Room (JO3.210)

Description: The Office of the Controller is delighted to offer monthly Financial Records System (FRS) training classes for faculty and staff who have direct or indirect responsibilities for processing, reporting, or overseeing financial transactions at UTD. FRS Training – Level 1 is a 2 hour workshop designed to help attendees:

  1. Obtain a basic understanding of UTD’s accounting structure.
  2. Learn how to navigate and read the online manager screens (screens 018, 019, 023)
  3. Understand the basic of FRS security
  4. Know how to access and view reports on the internet via ePrint

This workshop is given in a computer training room. In order to get the most value, we recommend that you bring your FRS account user name and password. This will allow you to follow the instructor by logging into your own set of data.

Target Audience: This class is for faculty and staff who have direct or indirect responsibilities for processing, reporting, or overseeing financial transactions at UTD.

Manager-Supervisor Certificate Program: The Series

Description: Our Manager-Supervisor Certificate Series consists of six modules, twelve (12) hour curriculum designed to train and support UT Dallas managers and supervisors in the performance of their jobs. Everyone who successfully completes all six modules of the class will receive a certificate of completion. Topics and schedule include:

  1. Effective Communication (Tuesday 11/10/2009)
  2. Equal Employment Opportunity Law (Tuesday 11/24/2009)
  3. Managing Performance (Wednesday 12/9/2009)
  4. Conflict Management (Tuesday 1/12/2010)
  5. Dynamic Discipline (Tuesday 1/26/2010)
  6. Motivation and Recognition of Employees (Tuesday 2/9/2010)

Manager-Supervisor Certificate Program: Effective Communication (Module 1)

Description: Participants will examine different communication styles and discuss ways to deal with the different styles of communication. Participants will discuss and explore other communication issues that greatly impact the success of manager/supervisor to employee relationship. November 10, AM till Noon (SOM 1.517)

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the communication process.
  2. Understand your style of communication
  3. Understand some common barriers to good communication
  4. Learn ways in which you can improve your communication skills
  5. Understand Active Listening and its benefits
  6. Identify ways in which you can improve your listening
  7. Learn how to combine effective listening and effective communication to become a more effective supervisor.

Unlocking Grant Money : Finding Research Funding Today

Description: The Office of Sponsored Projects and the McDermott Library will host an interactive demonstration of the SPIN (Sponsored Programs Information Network) and GENIUS (Global Expertise Network for Industry, Universities, and Scholars) databases. SPIN and GENIUS are the subscription databases the University of Texas at Dallas provides to assist researchers in finding funding opportunities. During this demonstration, you will have the opportunity to create your own personalized SPIN profile which will automatically send you targeted funding opportunities via e-mail.

Target Audience: This class is open to all UTD faculty and staff interested in researching funding opportunities: New faculty, post-docs, grad students and Principle Investigators/ administrators.

Description: The Manager's and Supervisors Roundtable is a group of UTD managers and supervisors who meet together to create opportunities for mentoring, professional development and networking. (We will be meeting from noon till 1:30 in AD 3.104 Lone Star Room.)

Target Audience: The group is open to UTD managers and supervisors who are directly charged with managing the performance of other University staff, including conducting annual performance reviews.

Manager-Supervisor Certificate Program: – EEO Laws (Module 2)

Description: Participants will gain a better understanding of Equal Employment Opportunity laws and the implications they hold for the manager, supervisor and the university as it relates to hiring, discipline and termination.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand that supervisors and managers are held to higher standards both by the University and the courts when it comes to the application of equal employment opportunity (EEO) practices and principles.
  2. Review and discuss five key guidelines that will help supervise/manage others in manner that is consistent with EEO laws.
  3. Identify and understand two types or legal standards regarding sexual harassment
  4. Learn five common pitfalls in responding appropriately to workplace harassment

McDermott Library Tours (Tours Begin At the Information Desk)

Description: Join us for a tour of McDermott Library with a knowledgeable staff member. Learn about the history, resources, and services on each floor. Library staff will conduct a 30-40 minute tour of the library. Discover the quiet and group study areas, government documents, and the maps collection. An introduction to Special Collections with its History of Aviation Collection, Philatelic Research Library, and Belsterling Botanical Collection will be included. The tour guide will introduce you to some of the staff at the Information Desk, Circulation Desk, and Reference Desk, and you'll find out where to go to check out laptops, audio books and DVDs.

Account Reconciliation Training-- Friday, December 2nd, from 2:00- 4:00p, Bluebonnet Room (AD3.106)

Description: The Office of Finance offers Account Reconciliation training classes each quarter. The class is for faculty and staff who must reconcile their financial system account reports and for supervisors or department heads that must review and approve the account reconciliation. In this class you will learn how to read your monthly financial system reports and will be instructed in the steps necessary to conduct account reconciliations. It is recommended that the person who reconciles the account and the person who reviews the reconciliation attend the class together, if possible.

Target Audience: Intended for UTD faculty and staff responsible for reconciling financial system account reports.

  4. Know how to set up and run Automated Journal Entries (Auto JEs)

We encourage attendees who have never been to an FRS training workshop to attend FRS Training – Level 1 before FRS Training – Level 2. This workshop is given in a computer training room. Catching Comet Pride: Customer Service Certificate Series - Spring Semester Waiting List

Description: In order to continue our move to becoming one of the best public research universities in the nation UTD must continue to attract and keep the brightest and best students, faculty and researchers. We must also work to continue to be a positive influence in our community. For all these things to happen we must be the best in providing responsive quality service. Catching Comet Pride is a certificate series designed to provide tools that will equip the trainees develop the skills, behaviors, and attitudes to provide the very best customer service to our potential students, current students, their families, the faculty and researchers, the community, and co-workers.

This series not only provide insights and rationale for outstanding customer service but will also provide hands on training for developing great customer services skills. The series will consist of four sessions, each session ranging from 2 to 2.5 hours in length. The sessions will cover the following areas

  1. Session 1 (Thursday, December 3):  Providing Rationale and Reasoning behind Customer Service initiative; to Communicate and Establish the Guiding Principles Behind Excellent Customer Service
  2. Session 2 (Thursday, December 17):  Will introduce the customer service deployment model and establish practical guidelines for the essential skills and attitudes needed for Excellent Customer Service. 
  3. Session 3 (Thursday, January 7): Will continue to develop the skills needed for customer service.
  4. Session 4 (Thursday, January 21):  To Establish a Personal Attitude and Awareness of the Individual’s Responsibility as it Relates to Excellent Customer Service!

Target Audience: This class is designed for all UTD employees.

Manager-Supervisor Certificate Program: Performance Management – Module 3

Description: Participants will discuss all aspects of an effective performance management system and the different methods for managing the performance of those they supervise. (2.5 hours)

Learning Objectives:

  1. Review and understand the key building blocks that constitute an effective performance management system.
  2. Identify and discuss the basic tools available for managing employee performance.
  3. Understand the primary and critical roles communication and relationship plays in performance management
  4. Learn the key components of an effective and meaningful annual review
  5. Learn how and when to use a written performance improvement plan (PIP)

This class is a part three of a six module, twelve (12) hour curriculum designed to train and support UT Dallas managers and supervisors in the performance of their jobs.
