The Department of Computer Science at UT Dallas houses world class researchers and educators. With close to 60 faculty members and 1,700 students, it is one of the largest computer science department in the country. Its faculty has been conducting research in databases, data mining and machine learning for many years. Recently, the department brought all this work under the umbrella of Data Science. The term Data Science also covers areas commonly referred to as Big Data and Data Analytics. New initiatives on teaching, research and application have been started in Data Science. These include a new graduate track in Data Science beginning in Fall 2013, numerous new research projects (some of them listed below along with faculty biographies) as well as investigations of new application in areas of medicine, healthcare, (sensor) networks, assistive technology, speech, cyber security, natural language processing, user modeling, social media analysis, etc. Workshop and symposia, including training sessions for industrial companies, are also planned.
