Security Tips & Threats

Policies: Mobile Device Security: Android

UT Dallas Information Security Best Practices strongly recommend that you configure the following items on all Android mobile devices.

Prevent your phone from being accessed via Bluetooth
Auto lock after inactivity
Require an unlock pattern for access
Auto-wipe the device after 10 unsuccessful passcode attempts

Unfortunately there is no "wipe after X failed logon attempts" built in, but you can download third party apps from the appstore which do that for free.

Preventing Your Phone from Being Accessed via Bluetooth

  1. Select Settings.
  2. Select Wireless and Network.
  3. Select Bluetooth Settings.
  4. If Bluetooth is enabled on your phone, keep Visible unchecked.

Setting an Unlock Pattern for Access

  1. Select Settings.
  2. Select Location and Security.
  3. Select Set Unlock Pattern.
  4. Select Next twice.
  5. Set a swipe pattern.
  6. Confirm the swipe pattern.
  7. Check Require Pattern to force pattern use on every phone unlock attempt.
  8. Choose Set up/Change Password and set a new password for your phone for factory data reset confirmation
  9. Uncheck Visible Passwords so that as passwords are typed they are not displayed on the screen (optional, but recommended)

Setting a Screen Timeout

  1. Select Settings
  2. Select Sound and Display
  3. Select Screen Timeout
  4. Choose a time for the screen to dim and thus lock (recommend the 2 minutes or less options)
