UT Dallas Information Security Best Practices strongly recommend that you configure the following items on all Blackberry mobile devices.

Prevent your phone from being accessed via Bluetooth
Auto lock after inactivity
Require a passcode to unlock the device
Auto-wipe the device after 10 unsuccessful passcode attempts

Disabling Bluetooth When It Is Not in Use

  1. Select Manage Connections.
  2. Uncheck the Bluetooth option.

Locking the Phone after Inactivity

  1. Select Options.
  2. Select Security Options.
  3. Select either General Settings or Passwords. This option will change depending on the operating system you have on your phone.
  4. Select Security Timeout.
  5. We recommend that you set this to a lower value such as 1-2 minutes.

Requiring a Passcode to Unlock the Device

  1. Select Options.
  2. Select Security Options.
  3. Select either General Settings or Passwords. This option will change depending on the operating system you have on your phone.
  4. Set an unlock passcode.

Setting Device to Erase Data After Multiple Failed Passcode Attempts

  1. Select Options.
  2. Select Security Options.
  3. Select either General Settings or Passwords. This option will change depending on the operating system you have on your phone.
  4. Select Set Maximum Password Attempts.
  5. We recommend that you set this to 10 attempts.
