UT System Medical and Repatriation/Evacuation Insurance Policy Requirements

• Medical benefits of at least $50,000 per accident or illness
• Repatriation of remains benefits of at least $7,500
• Medical evacuation benefits of at least $10,000
• Deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness

  Any policy plan or contract secured to fulfill health insurance requirements must, at minimum, be:

  (1) Underwritten by an insurance corporation having an A.M. Best rating of "A-" or above, an Insurance Solvency International, Ltd. (ISI) rating of "A-" or above, a Standard and Poor's Claims-paying Ability rating of "A" or above, a Weiss Research, Inc. rating of B+ or above, or such other rating service as the Agency may from time to time specify; or

  (2) Backed by the full faith and credit of the government of the exchange visitor's home country; or

  (3) Part of a health benefits program offered on a group basis to employees or enrolled students by a designated sponsor; or

  
  (4) Offered through or underwritten by a federally qualified Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) or eligible Competitive Medical Plan (CMP) as determined by the Health Care Financing Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. (hide)

Waiver Process

1. Find alternative insurance that meets or exceeds the UT System requirements
2. Enroll in classes

3. Your waiver will be processed within 2 business days.  If you are covered by insurance that does not include repatriation/evacuation coverage, you will be assessed a fee for enrollment in an approved repatriation/evacuation plan.
4.  You will receive an email to your UT Dallas account when your waiver has been processed.

Please Note:  This two-day processing applies throughout the waiver period.  Students who submit SHI waivers on the day of or the day before any university payment deadline will have to pay the SHI fee and then request a reimbursement from the Bursar’s Office after the waiver is processed.

Annual Waivers
You now have the option of submitting a waiver for up to three semesters.  Follow the waiver process listed above and ensure your alternate insurance covers the mandatory coverage dates of each semester you are requesting a waiver.  Yes, it’s just that simple! 

Your alternate insurance must cover the following to obtain a waiver:

*Summer coverage is mandatory only if student is enrolled.
