Canned-Good Sculpture Event Designed to Build Awareness
Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to participate in the second annual Raising Cans competition, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, March 31 on the Student Union mall.
At the competition, teams build “sculptures” using items they collect for the Comet Cupboard, an on-campus food pantry which provides nonperishable food items to students in need. Participants can use anything from the Cupboard’s needed items list.
A team of faculty, staff and students will judge the best design. All donated items go to the Comet Cupboard.
“What we hope to do is build a community of people who are working for a common purpose,” said project coordinator Hillary Campbell. “This is a demonstrative way we can raise awareness for the need and also have a little fun.”
Prizes are given for “Most Items Collected” and “Best Sculpture” contests. Winning student groups will receive Visa gift cards for their group. Winning staff/faculty groups will receive custom UT Dallas Spirit Day T-shirts.
Lunch will be provided for all participants.
Last year, student organizations, athletic teams and campus departments and offices collected nearly 2,500 food items for the event. Participants do not have to be an official club or campus office; any group of people can make up a team.
