President to Deliver State of the University Address on Sept. 17

The University of Texas at Dallas invites faculty and staff members to hear the 2014 State of the University address, to be delivered by UT Dallas President David E. Daniel at 1 p.m. on Sept. 17. This year’s presentation will be held in the Edith O'Donnell Arts & Technology Building’s lecture hall.

The president reports every fall on the University’s status and outlook for the future. The presentation includes remarks from leaders of the University's Academic Senate, Staff Council and Student Government.

Office of Diversity to Host ‘AccessAbility Summit’ at UT Dallas

The Office of Diversity and Community Engagement will host an “AccessAbility Summit” on Oct. 13 to address the educational needs and challenges faced by people with disabilities. The event is designed to help faculty, staff members and others who help coordinate on-campus events, emergency planning, transportation and online information.

The summit will explore accessibility requirements in Texas and at UT Dallas and will include a panel discussion. Speakers will include Britt Berrett PhD’09, clinical professor in the Jindal School of Management; and Michael Thomas, executive director of My Possibilities. Read more

North Texas Giving Day to Raise Support for University Centers

North Texas Giving Day is set for Sept. 18, from 6 a.m. to midnight. The online event sponsored by Communities Foundation of Texas encourages North Texans to raise funds for more than 1,600 local nonprofits, with options including UT Dallas, the Callier Center for Communication Disorders and the Center for BrainHealth. Contributions of at least $25 are eligible for bonus funds through the organization.

In 2013, donors made more than 75,000 gifts totaling $25.2 million to more than 1,350 North Texas nonprofits.

The Callier Center invites you to “Be a HEAR O” on North Texas Giving Day. For every $1,000 raised, a child in need will receive two hearing aids and three years of follow-up services. For more information, contact Shanon Patrick at 214-905-3084.

Police Offer Free Self-Defense Classes for Women Employees

The UT Dallas Police Department will teach women how to protect themselves with a system of self-defense tactics. The Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) program is a comprehensive course that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance before teaching the basics of hands-on defense. The free courses are taught by nationally certified RAD instructors.

Courses are scheduled for the following dates:

  • Sept. 26, 6-9 p.m., and Sept. 27, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Oct. 24, 6-9 p.m., and Oct. 25, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Nov. 14, 6-9 p.m., and Nov. 15, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Reminders

  • Microsoft Office Training — A series of courses on Microsoft Office applications will open with a beginner class at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Brazos Computer Lab (FO 1.206C). Registration is required. Watch for future classes on Microsoft Outlook, Intermediate Word, Intermediate PowerPoint, formatting Excel (no formulas), Mail Merge in Word, Advanced Word and Advanced PowerPoint.
  • Surplus Sale — Surplus will hold a sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Surplus Warehouse. The event, which is open to faculty, staff and students, will offer attendees the chance to buy furniture, computers and audio/video equipment that the University no longer needs.
  • 8th Annual Prepare Fair — UT Dallas will hold its annual Prepare Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 16. Students, faculty and staff are invited to visit safety, emergency and health information booths, participate in fire extinguisher training and watch a “smoke is no joke” demonstration. A blood drive also has been organized in coordination with the event.
  • Celebration of New Buildings — The Office of Administration invites the campus community to celebrate the opening of Parking Structure 3 (PS3), Residence Hall West (RHW), Dining Hall West and Recreation Center West. Ribbon-cutting ceremonies will be held from 2-2:30 p.m. Sept. 18 at PS3 and 2:30-3 p.m. at RHW. Refreshments will be served after the RHW ceremony.
  • Corporate Challenge Fundraising — Richardson Corporate Challenge raffle tickets are available for $5 as part of the fundraising efforts for Special Olympics. Raffle prizes include three pairs of roundtrip airline tickets with hotel stays. Contact the Office of Administration at extension 2213 to purchase tickets.   • Policy Restricts Tobacco Use on Campus — The UT Dallas Tobacco Free Building Policy prohibits the use of all tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes, inside University-owned or leased buildings or University vehicles, or within 33 feet of a building entry, air intake or window.
