Based on feedback received from campus leaders, the Information Security Office is expanding its training approach to include videos that can be viewed on demand. The videos are licensed from the SANS Institute and are part of the “Securing the Human” series already used by many universities and corporations. The title of the series refers to the fact that the right hardware and programs can go only so far in protecting information unless the people who use them learn to work securely as well.
The professionally-produced videos average 3-5 minutes per topic. For those users who find it difficult to attend classes and special events, the videos offer an efficient and convenient alternative.
There are videos on topics that are relevant to work such as encryption, privacy, data protection and mobile device safety. There are even videos related to using social media safely and setting up home Wi-Fi. Each video includes a couple of self-assessment questions. The entire series of nearly 40 videos can be completed in about 2 hours.
Users can now find the video training within eLearning by logging in with NetID and selecting the “Information Security – Securing the Human” link. The Information Security Office recommends beginning with the videos most relevant and interesting, then watcing the rest to increase overall security awareness.
