As the Ackerman Center for Holocaust Studies celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, an effort is underway to support the center’s next generation of teachers and scholars at UT Dallas.

The Istvan and Zsuzsanna Ozsváth Research Fund will benefit top graduate students in Holocaust Studies and honor two longtime University leaders.

Under Dr. Zsuzsanna Ozsváth’s direction, Holocaust Studies has become a program of excellence in teaching, learning and research.

Along with her late husband Istvan, a founding math professor at UT Dallas, Ozsváth has made the Ackerman Center for Holocaust Studies a home for scholars, students, immigrants and Holocaust survivors. For information about contributing, email Holly Hull Miori or call 972-883-4119.

FY16 Annual Compliance Training is now Available in eLearning

The Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance has assigned fiscal 2016 compliance training modules for employees to complete by the end of the month. Staff and faculty members are required to complete all of the annual training modules, as well as any job-specific training assigned to them, in eLearning by Monday, Feb. 29. If you have questions regarding compliance training, please call Institutional Compliance at ext. 2233. The training is not required for student workers and new employees who completed New Employee Compliance Training after Aug. 1, 2015.

Novelist to Discuss Her Work for Black History Celebration

PhD candidate Sanderia Faye will discuss and read from her novel, Mourner’s Bench, the story of a young girl coming to terms with religion, racism and feminism in the 1960s, as part of the University’s Black History Month celebration 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17.

The event will be in the Galerstein Women’s Center (SSB 4.300), which is organizing the event in collaboration with the Eugene McDermott Library.

Register by Friday, Feb. 12.

The UT Southwestern Mobile Mammography Unit will be on campus 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, on the east side of the Edith O’Donnell Arts and Technology Building.

UT Dallas faculty and staff members, as well as their spouses, can schedule mammogram appointments by calling 214-645-2560 or 866-277-0710. Have your health insurance information available when you call. Sponsored mammograms are also available for patients without health care coverage.

Pop Up Farmers’ Market Returns for Spring Semester
UT Dallas Dining Services will continue hosting its “Pop Up Farmers Market” on the second Tuesday of each month in the spring semester. The next event will be 9-11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, at the Plinth.

Students, faculty and staff are invited to learn about sustainable and healthy food options, and shop the market’s produce, spices and prepared foods. Recipe cards with Dining Hall coupons will also be available.

Police Offer Free Self-Defense Classes for Men and Women

The UT Dallas Police Department will offer two-day Rape Aggression Defense classes for women and Resisting Aggression with Defense classes for men this semester. These free courses, which are taught on campus by nationally certified instructors, are open to faculty and staff members.

The classes are 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday. Registration is required. Participants must attend both days. The schedule is as follows:

  • Women’s classes: Feb. 19-20, April 8-9 and June 10-11.
  • Men’s classes: March 11-12 and May 6-7.

Basketball Teams to Host Community Appreciation Day Feb. 6
The Office of Administration and the Department of Athletics will host Community Appreciation Day on Saturday, Feb. 6, at the UT Dallas Activity Center (AB). Community members, faculty and staff are invited to bring their families for a free lunch and Comets basketball. Both teams will take on Belhaven University. The women’s game begins at 1 p.m., and the men’s game begins at 3 p.m. Please RSVP with your name and the number of people in your group to [email protected] as soon as possible.

Heart Walk
There will be a UT System Heart Walk at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10, to recognize the importance of heart health. The general meeting location is at the Plinth, and groups can also meet at Synergy Park North (outside the Wellness Center) and at the Research and Operations Center (at the first floor mailbox).

Dining Hall West Spirit Fridays
Faculty or staff members who wear orange, green or UT Dallas-branded clothes can eat lunch at Dining Hall West for $5 plus tax 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Fridays. Spirit shuttles are available from Lot R to the dining hall during these times.

Nutrition Coaching Services
Employee wellness manager Deborah Hamlin, RD, LD, will visit the Center for BrainHealth the first Monday of each month and Callier Dallas the third Thursday of each month for free nutrition coaching. Email her to schedule an appointment.
