University to Celebrate Inauguration of President Benson

Join fellow staff and faculty members, community leaders, alumni and students on Thursday, Oct. 27, for the inauguration of Dr. Richard C. Benson as the fifth president of the University. The ceremony starts at 3 p.m. in the ATEC Building Lecture Hall.

During the ceremony, Dr. Benson will be granted the authority and symbols of his office by representatives from The University of Texas System, including UT System Chancellor William H. McRaven and UT System Regent Ernest Aliseda. View the program.

Police Offer Free Self-Defense Classes for Men, Women

UT Dallas Police

Officers will offer self-defense classes for women and men in October and November. In these free classes, the UT Dallas Police Department will teach faculty, staff and students how to protect themselves with the Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) system of realistic self-defense tactics. The classes also are open to family members as space allows.

The courses will begin with instruction on awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance before teaching the basics of hands-on defense. The classes will be held at the UT Dallas Police Department (northeast corner of Parking Lot A).

Upcoming classes, which run from 5 to 9 p.m., have been set for the following dates:

  • R.A.D. for Women - Oct. 27-29.
  • R.A.D. for Men - Nov. 17-19.

National Disability Employment Awareness Month Events Planned

Come learn about accessibility at October events that recognize National Disability Employment Awareness Month. The Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance will host panel discussions, an exhibit and student job fair with the Office of Diversity and Community Engagement and Student AccessAbility.

Green Zone Classes Seek Friendly Campus for Veterans

The Green Zone program works to establish a University-wide network of staff and faculty members who can help shape a military-friendly campus culture. The name originates in the military and indicates a safe zone for soldiers.

UT Dallas Green Zone training topics include military terminology and culture, transition challenges, classroom considerations, and campus and community resources. The next class will be held Thursday, Nov. 17, from 9 a.m. to noon in SU 2.602C.

Participants who complete the Veteran Services Center course receive a certificate and a Green Zone office decal. Register online. Space is limited, and registration is required for the session. Email Archie Nettles or call the center at ext. 4916 for details.

Comet Cruiser Adds New Route, Stop

Comet Cruiser

The Comet Cruiser bus services have expanded to include a pilot Cityline/Bush Express route and a new midpoint stop on the McCallum Express route.

The Cityline/Bush Express route has three stops: on Rutford Avenue in front of Residence Hall North; near the shopping center at the intersection of West Renner Road and Custer Parkway; and at the Cityline/Bush Train Station. It will operate from 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Monday-Thursday, starting from campus. The estimated route time from campus to the Cityline/Bush Train Station is 15 minutes.

The new stop on the McCallum Express route is at the intersection of North Coit and West Campbell roads. Route times are expected to remain the same. For more information and a detailed route map, visit the UT Dallas Parking and Transportation website.

Learn the Tools to Be Successful at Professional Development Fair

The UT Dallas Trainer Alliance will present the third annual Professional Development Fair on Wednesday, Oct. 26, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Faculty/Staff Dining Room (SU 2.905). Representatives from 16 campus departments will help you develop “Tools for Tomorrow’s Success,” the theme of this year’s fair, which also will feature games, prizes and giveaways.

Lunch-and-Learn: Game-Based Courses in eLearning

Faculty, staff and teaching assistants are invited to a lunch-and-learn session on “Game-based Courses in eLearning.” The session, presented by Kathy Zolton, senior lecturer of accounting in the Naveen Jindal School of Management, will be from noon to 2 p.m., Friday, Oct. 21, in JO 3.516. CARE Award Nominations Due Oct. 31

Nominations are being accepted for CARE Awards, which honor outstanding staff members in the fall and spring. The program recognizes staff who have demonstrated superior performance, offered outstanding customer service, and performed acts that have enhanced the image of the University. Fall nominations are due Monday, Oct. 31.

Review Your Oct. 3 Paycheck for Correct Deductions
Human Resources encourages employees to review the paychecks they received Oct. 3 to make sure benefit selections and amounts are correct. Discrepancies must be reported to HR by Monday, Oct. 31.

Corporate Challenge Set to Close with Ceremony
The Corporate Challenge Closing Ceremony will be held 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at the Richardson Civic Center. UT Dallas participants are invited to enjoy an awards ceremony and celebration dinner. Special Olympics raffle ticket purchases and donations are still being accepted. Surplus Bike Sale on Oct. 19
Surplus will hold a bike sale from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the Surplus Warehouse, near the Facilities Management, Police and Service buildings. The event will feature 150 bicycles priced between $20 and $60. Cash or check only. First come, first served.

Flu Shots Scheduled for Oct. 31, Nov. 1
