University Golf Tournament to Benefit Student Scholarships

The 24th Annual UT Dallas Scholarship Tournament is set for Friday, April 28, at Firewheel Golf Park in Garland. Proceeds benefit the Betty and Gifford Johnson Graduate, Patti Henry-Pinch Undergraduate, and Academic Bridge scholarship endowments.

The scholarships help undergraduates with research and travel expenses, allow graduate students to present their work at national conferences and help smooth the transition for first-generation college students. Over the years, tournament proceeds have helped raise the value of these endowments to over $520,000. Faculty and staff members are invited to play. Also, The Practice Tee will host UT Dallas Day from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 7. Students, faculty and staff are invited to enjoy free food, drinks and the use of the facility’s putting green, par-3 course and driving range. Golf clubs will be provided.

Longtime Research Lab Technician Passes Away

Longtime employee John Maynard, an engineering technician in the Natural Science and Engineering Research Laboratory, passed away Jan. 20 at the age of 63. Maynard, a Dallas native, worked in the Cleanroom Research Laboratory (CRL), and joined the UT Dallas staff in November 2000. He served with the Navy during the Vietnam War. CRL associate director Wallace Martin worked with Maynard for 13 years. “We will miss John for his friendship and sense of humor,” Martin said. “His experience will be difficult to replace.”

Free Storm Spotter Training Open to Staff and Faculty

The Department of Environmental Health and Safety’s Office of Emergency Management will host Skywarn, a free storm spotter training program from the National Weather Service, on Wednesday, March 8, in the Davidson Auditorium (JSOM 1.118). Basic training will be 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., and advanced training will be 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The training is open to all faculty, staff and students. It will cover:

  • The basics of thunderstorm development.
  • The fundamentals of storm structure.
  • Identifying potential severe weather features.
  • How to report information.
  • Basic severe weather safety.

Campus Recycling Schedule Changes

Campus Recycling Schedule Changes

To help make recycling on campus more efficient, crews will now collect recyclable items at night on an as-needed basis rather than during daytime business hours.

Departments will not be charged for this service. Continue to place recyclable items — such as paper, cardboard, beverage containers, plastics #1-7, aluminum, tin and steel — in deskside and community recycling bins. In addition, remember to recycle toner and ink cartridges in the Staff Council collection bins across campus. Each donated cartridge raises money for the Staff Council Scholarship Fund. CERT Training Teaches What to Do When Disaster Looms

The Campus Emergency Response Team, sponsored by Environmental Health and Safety's Office of Emergency Management, is a trained group of faculty, staff and student volunteers who have pledged to assist UT Dallas in the event of a disaster or crisis. A three-week basic training course for new members has been scheduled on the following dates from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Safety and Grounds Building Training Room:

  • Tuesday, Feb. 28.
  • Thursday, March 2.
  • Tuesday, March 7.
  • Thursday, March 9.
  • Tuesday, March 14.
  • Thursday, March 16.

Gender Studies Lecture Series to Present Film on March 7

The Office of Diversity and Community Engagement, the Galerstein Women's Center and the Gender Studies Program will present “Gender Studies Lecture Series: The Mask You Live In” at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 7, in the Faculty/Staff Dining Room (SU 2.905A). The film follows boys and young men as they struggle to stay true to themselves while negotiating America’s narrow definition of masculinity. Natural Slim Program
The UT System Office of Employee Benefits is offering Naturally Slim for employees enrolled in the UT Select medical health plan. Participants will learn how to lose weight and improve their health. Greeting Card Drive
The Office of Student Volunteerism is collecting blank stationery and assorted new greeting cards to help low-income senior citizens stay connected. Collected items will be dispersed by Senior Source, which assists and connects older adults to resources, opportunities and independence. The drive ends Tuesday, Feb. 28. Collection bins are in the OSV office (SSA 14.431T), the first-floor lobby of the Student Union and the Administration Building’s second-floor lobby near the elevators.

Nominations for Convocation Awards
The Office of Undergraduate Education is seeking nominations for the Provost’s Award for Faculty Excellence in Undergraduate Research, the Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award and the Undergraduate Alumni Achievement Award. The awards will be presented at Honors Convocation on Wednesday, May 10. The deadline to submit nominations is Friday, March 3. Annual Performance Appraisals
Annual employee performance appraisals are due in Human Resources by Friday, April 7. Appraisals for new employees — those who joined the University between Jan. 1 and April 15, 2017 — are due June 30. Questions or concerns may be directed to the Employee Relations staff. Training opportunities are also available to assist supervisors and employees.

New Medical District Express Route
Parking and Transportation and the Office of the Provost have launched a new Comet Cruiser Medical District Express Route. The shuttle provides service to and from the main UT Dallas campus and the Center for BrainHealth, the Center for Vital Longevity, UT Southwestern, Parkland Hospital and Callier Center Dallas. The pilot service will operate Monday through Friday until the end of the spring semester. A full schedule and route map are available online.
