Grammy-Winning Jazz Artist to Perform at ATEC Lecture Hall

American jazz trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard will perform alongside his quintet the E-Collective at 8 p.m. Friday, April 21, in the Edith O'Donnell Arts and Technology Lecture Hall. A 15-foot relief sculpture, built by ATEC Professor Andrew F. Scott and his team of students, will serve as an interactive backdrop for the show.

A five-time Grammy winner, Blanchard has been one of the world’s leading jazz artists since his debut in the 1980s. He has released 20 albums and has composed the scores for films such as “Malcolm X,” “Love & Basketball,” “Cadillac Records” and “Chi-Raq.” Tickets are on sale. Read More.

Human Resources Posts 2017 Drug-Free Workplace Notice

Human Resources has posted the 2017 notice for a drug-free workplace in accordance with the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act. The notice is an annual reminder to all employees that the unauthorized purchase, manufacture, distribution, possession, sale, storage or use of an illegal drug or controlled substance while on duty, while in or on premises or property owned or controlled by the University, or while in vehicles used for University business, is prohibited.

Celebrate National Volunteer Week Beginning April 24

Students, staff and faculty are invited to join the Office of Student Volunteerism (OSV) in celebrating National Volunteer Week, April 24-28, with on-campus events that highlight the benefits of service. Registration is now open for events including Piggy Bank Painting, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, in Galaxy Room C, and Hats for Hope, presented in association with Health Occupation Students of America, from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, in Galaxy Rooms B and C. Dinner at Panera Will Help Support Student Scholarships

On Wednesday, April 19, there will be a fundraiser for student scholarships from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Panera Bread at 730 E. Campbell Road, Suite 300 in Richardson. Present a UT Dallas Student Scholarship fundraiser flyer in print or electronic form when you order, and Panera will donate a portion of all sales during this time frame to the UT Dallas Scholarship Golf Tournament fundraising efforts, which benefit the Academic Bridge Program, the Betty and Gifford Johnson Graduate Scholarship, and the Patti Henry Pinch Scholarship for Undergraduate Research.

The 24th annual golf tournament will be Friday, April 28, at Firewheel Golf Park in Garland. There is still time to sign up for the tournament. Take the Preparedness Pledge

UT Dallas is participating in America’s PrepareAthon! — a nationwide, community-based campaign to increase emergency preparedness and resilience. Its goal is to increase the number of people who:

  • Understand the hazards that affect their community.
  • Know what to do to be safe and mitigate damage.
  • Take action to increase their preparedness.
  • Participate in community resilience planning.

Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to take the Preparedness Pledge to do at least one thing to better prepare themselves for hazards. Those who take the pledge will be entered to win a NOAA weather radio. The winner will be chosen at random and announced at the end of the month.

International Travel Wellness Lunch-and-Learn

Faculty and staff who travel abroad on University business are invited to attend a Travel Wellness Lunch-and-Learn from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, May 19, in the Student Union Faculty and Staff Dining Room. Representatives from the Benefits Office, the Employee Assistance Program, and the International Center Risk and Safety Office will discuss assistance and benefits available to employees while they travel. Complete the RSVP form to indicate your attendance and reserve your lunch. Seating is limited.

New Map to Help Campus Deliveries

Faculty and staff members ordering deliveries to campus should direct vendors to the new online delivery map. The map offers recommended driving routes and parking areas for delivery drivers, as well as areas where no driving is allowed. Vehicles must have a company logo, decal or car topper, and have emergency flashers on when parked in the designated loading zones, 10-minute parking, service vehicle, or visitor parking areas notated on the map. Parking in nondesignated areas may result in citations, booting or towing.

Reminders

Discount Available for Coding Camps
The Center for Computer Science Education & Outreach will offer more than 100 weeklong summer coding camps starting Monday, June 5, for children in grades 6-12 at UT Dallas. The center will offer coding camps for elementary school children at offsite locations.

The cost for full-day camps is $275 per week. Half-day camps cost $140 per week. Immediate family members of UT Dallas faculty, staff and students can use the promotional code UTDFAMILY during registration for a 40 percent discount. For more information, email [email protected].

Wi-Fi Roaming Service Now Available
Students, faculty and staff can now use eduroam (education roaming), which offers users from participating academic institutions secure wireless internet access at any eduroam location. UT Dallas users can access networks at participating institutions with their NetID and password. Before using the service, users will need to install the eduroam automatic configuration tool on their computers. When using eduroam at other institutions, they must put “@utdallas.edu” in the username. Learn more at utdallas.edu/oit/howto/eduroam or eduroam.us.

OSV Drive
The Office of Student Volunteerism will be collecting new and unopened hygiene items to benefit the Human Rights Initiative. Items such as shampoo, toothpaste, lotion, body wash and feminine products are especially needed. Collection bins will be in the OSV office (SSA 14.431T), the McDermott Library lobby, the first-floor lobby of the Student Union, and the second-floor lobby near the elevators in the Administration Building. Donations will be accepted through Friday, April 28.

Commencement Ceremony Volunteers
Staff members interested in volunteering at the Spring 2017 Commencement Ceremonies and Memories on the Mall are invited to sign up online by Friday, April 28. Volunteers will be contacted to confirm shift scheduling after signing up.
