Information Security Office Offers Security Awareness Night

Security Awareness Night

The Information Security Office will host a free Security Awareness Night from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. tonight, Oct. 4, in JSOM 11.218. Author and security expert Dr. Jesper Johansson, a senior member of the technical staff at Google, will discuss “Building a Security Practice,” covering emerging risks, securing the cloud, achieving proper network hygiene and influencing organization culture. Johansson was a professor at Boston University and on the senior security staff with Microsoft and Amazon before joining Google.

Students, faculty, and staff are invited to register to attend this free event, which will be followed by a meet and greet.

Free Flu Shots Available Oct. 30-31

Flu shot clinics for faculty, staff and retirees will be held Oct. 30 and 31 on campus, as well as Callier Center Dallas, the Center for Vital Longevity and the Center for BrainHealth. View the schedule and make an appointment online. Bring your Comet Card, driver’s license, insurance card and completed consent forms to your appointment. Flu shots are free to employees with or without the accepted insurance. Vitamin B12 shots, Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccines and tuberculosis skin tests will also be offered for additional fees. Join Health Trails for UT System Wellness Challenge

Health Trails

Register for the 2017 UT System Wellness Challenge Health Trails. From Oct. 9 through Nov. 5, challenge yourself and your colleagues to walk 10,000 to 15,000 steps a day, drink eight to 10 glasses of water a day, and sleep seven to nine hours a night. Participants who complete the four-week challenge will earn prizes.

Institutional Review Board Fall Workshops

The Institutional Review Board offers informal fall workshops on applications or protocols for IRB review, amendments or annual renewals of their projects. No registration or appointments are needed. IRB staff can answer questions on the information required in each section of the protocol, reviewer questions and comments, informed consent forms and processes, and more complex research design issues.

Get hands-on, specific assistance for your applications for IRB review. All researchers are welcome to attend any session. The four workshops this month will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, in ECSS 3.503; from noon to 2 p.m., Friday, Oct. 13, in GR 2.326; from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, in JSOM 13.510; and from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 30, in ATC 1.201.

Brain Matters: How Cravings and Addiction Affect the Brain

Join Drs. Francesca Filbey and Sven Kroener from the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 24 in the Davidson Auditorium (JSOM 1.118) as they present their latest research to the public on how addiction affects the brain. AccessAbility Summit, Diversity Recruitment Fair

Learn about disability employment issues and opportunities at the AccessAbility Summit and Raytheon Diversity Recruitment Fair, sponsored by the Office of Diversity and Community Engagement, in partnership with the Office of Student AccessAbility and corporate partner Raytheon.

The summit, held from 2 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 10, at the Davidson Auditorium (JSOM 1.118), will feature a panel discussion and networking opportunities, along with two keynote speakers:

  • Tracy Jordan BA’08, MS’11, assistant vice president, senior quality assurance analyst and tester, Bank of America
  • Kristy Mandigo, section manager, systems engineering, integration and test, Raytheon

The Raytheon Diversity Recruitment Fair will be from 2 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 11, at the Visitor Center and Bookstore atrium.

CTL Hosts Discussion on Meeting Diverse Learners’ Needs

The Center for Teaching and Learning presents “The Role of Universal Design in Meeting the Needs of Diverse Learners,” a discussion of how accommodating students with disabilities can improve everyone’s learning experience, from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24 in the McDermott Library (MC 2.410). Kerry Tate, director of the Office of AccessAbility, will share requirements, recommendations and case examples. RSVP by Wednesday, Oct. 18.

UT Dallas Day at the Practice Tee

The Practice Tee will host UT Dallas Day from 5:15 to 7:15 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 12. Students, faculty and staff are invited to enjoy free pizza, drinks and the use of the facility's putting green, par-3 course and driving range. Golf clubs will be available. The event kicks off the countdown to the 25th Annual UT Dallas Scholarship Golf Tournament, to be held April 27.

Canyon Creek Heights Ribbon-Cutting

The Division of Student Affairs and the Office of Administration will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Canyon Creek Heights apartments at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 19. The event will be held in front of Canyon Creek South (CH6) off Waterview Parkway and Loop Road SW. Light refreshments will be served.

Reminders

Review Your Latest Paycheck for Benefits Changes
Human Resources urges employees to review the benefits selections on their Oct. 2 paychecks or view a summary of their benefits online through My UT Benefits. If you find any discrepancies, please report them to the Human Resources Benefits team by Tuesday, Oct. 31. Discrepancies due to clerical errors that are reported by Oct. 31 will be changed in accordance with the UT System administrative policy and requirements.

UT FLEX Deadlines Approaching
The last day to spend your UT FLEX funds this year is Wednesday, Nov. 15, and the last day to submit claims for reimbursement is Thursday, Nov. 30. Learn more about your accounts, deadlines and resources available to you on the UT System website’s UT Flex Accounts page.

University Travel Authorization
If you’re traveling outside the country on behalf of the University, please obtain employee or student travel authorization before departure, and register your trip in International SOS. For more information, email the International Center.

Police Department Offers Self-Defense Classes
The University Police will offer free Rape Aggression Defense classes for women on Oct. 4-6, Oct. 20-21, Nov. 12-13, and Dec. 8-9. Classes are open to all students, faculty and staff, and are held at the Police Department building. Class size is limited, so registration is required. For additional information, email Cpl. Corporate Challenge Raising Funds for Special Olympics
As the 2017 Richardson Corporate Challenge draws to a close, two more scheduled fundraisers remain. Raffle tickets are available for $5, offering round-trip airline tickets with hotel stays.
