Volunteers Needed for Commencement, Memories on the Mall

Staff members interested in volunteering at the Spring 2018 Commencement Ceremonies and Memories on the Mall are invited to sign up online by this Friday. Commencement roles include greeters, ushers and shuttle guides. Duties for Memories on the Mall include distributing alumni tote bags to graduates and serving refreshments. Available shifts include:

Wednesday, May 9:

  • Commencement: 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., noon to 5 p.m. or all day (7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
  • Memories on the Mall: 9:45 to 11 a.m., 12:15 to 1:30 p.m., 2:45 to 4 p.m. or 5:15 to 6:30 p.m.

Thursday, May 10:

  • Commencement: 7:30 to 11:45 a.m., 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. or all day (7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.)
  • Memories on the Mall: 9:45 to 11 a.m., 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. or 2:45 to 4 p.m.

Friday, May 11:

  • Commencement: 7:30 to 11:45 a.m., 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. or all day (7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.)
  • Memories on the Mall: 9:45 to 11 a.m., 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. or 2:45 to 4 p.m.

Registered volunteers will be contacted to confirm shift scheduling. Commencement starts with Honors Convocation on Tuesday, May 8. There will be 10 graduation ceremonies in all, with the last at 2 p.m. Friday, May 11.

Call for Comments: Campus Master Plan Update

The University is updating its Campus Master Plan and seeks input on the future composition of campus. Voice your opinions and ideas on what type of buildings or building enhancements are needed, or what services should be available. Please review previous plans and submit your comments online.

Employee LGBTQ+ May Mixer

QUTD LGBT+ Employee Resource Group

QuTD, the LGBTQ+ employee resource group on campus, will hold a social mixer on Thursday, May 3, at 5 p.m. at the Northside Drafthouse. NSF CAREER Award Workshops

The Office of Research and Office of Graduate Studies will host two workshops in May related to the National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER).

The Previous Awardees Panel will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday, May 7, in FA 2.206. Drs. Jeremiah Gassensmith, Benjamin Raichel and Chadwin Young will provide guidance on program development, writing, and what happens during the review process. A Coordinating Committee webinar will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, in FA 2.206 to address questions about development and submission of proposals to the program. Research Office Unveils News Tools

The Office of Research has two new tools available to ease Data Management Plan (DMP) creation and request access to new high-performance computing resources.

The University has partnered with DMPTool.org to offer guided DMP creation and review. Templates for 40 major funding agencies are available, as well as up-to-date listings of campus and departmental resources. Visit data.utdallas.edu for more information.

Callisto is a new high-performance cluster available to all researchers. Please fill out this form to request an allocation.

The Office of Research also is collaborating with Amazon Web Services to host sessions on cloud-based research. Please fill out this survey on particular topics of interest, and you will be contacted when events are scheduled in May.

Lunch-and-Learn on Echo360 Lecture Capture Platform

Education Technology Services invites all faculty, staff, teaching assistants and research assistants to an interactive lunch-and-learn on Echo360, which is a newly available lecture capture platform with active learning components. This session will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15, in JSOM 2.115. Registration is required. Email Roopa Chandrasekhar for more information.

Skin Cancer Prevention Lunch-and-Learn

The Office of Administration and the Wellness Committee will welcome Dr. Stephanie Savory, assistant professor of dermatology at UT Southwestern Medical Center, to explain how to prevent and detect skin cancer from noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15, in Galaxy Rooms A and B (SU 2.602). Wellness Lunch-and-Learn on Depression

The Wellness Committee will welcome David Mora to discuss the specific symptoms, causes and signs of depression, as well as resources for assistance, from noon to 1 p.m. on Friday, May 18, in JSOM 11.214 and JSOM 11.218. Space is limited to 100 participants, so register online by Monday, May 14, to reserve a spot.

Sustainability Launches Online Tools

The Office of Sustainability offers tools for finding green services on campus. You can locate water bottle refilling stations and recycling locations on the Sustainability website.

University Golf Tournament to Benefit Student Scholarships
Faculty and staff are invited to the 25th Annual UT Dallas Scholarship Golf Tournament, to be held Friday at Firewheel Golf Park in Garland. Proceeds benefit the Betty and Gifford Johnson Graduate, Patti Henry-Pinch Undergraduate and Academic Bridge scholarship endowments. Zipcar Now Offering Department Accounts
Zipcar now allows departments to create accounts to use its vehicle-sharing service for business purposes. The recurring membership fee is waived for departments. Cars can be rented by the hour or day. Once an account is created, individuals on the account will have access to Zipcar locations throughout the U.S. Learn more on the UT Dallas Zipcar webpage and visit Zipcar’s site to join.

Comet Cabs Expand Service to Synergy Park North
Parking and Transportation has extended the Rutford North Comet Cab route to include service to both Synergy Park North buildings (SPN and SP2) to simplify access to destinations such as the SPN Wellness Center, UTDesign and the Student Testing Center. Hours for this route have expanded to 7:45 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more details, visit the route map online.
