Quality Assurance Plan

ITIF HE3 Plan Overview

This project consists of two parts. One part is to supply wireless connectivity to the students residing in the Waterview apartment phases V, VI and VII. The other portion of the plan is to provide wireless connectivity on the campus itself is several specific “common” areas where campus activity is the greatest.

Goals

  1. Provide sufficient connectivity to students in apartments in Waterview Phases V, VI and VII.
  2. Provide additional on-campus connectivity for faculty, staff and students in the more popular “common” areas.

Staffing

The Waterview apartment portion of the project will be done on a contractual basis. The on-campus work will be done by existing staff, drawn from both the TaCS and the TCS departments within IR.

Equipment

The wireless gear will be Orinoco access points, AP2000 if available and AP1000 if not. The wireless radio cards will be the Orinoco silver cards.

Cost Types

The entire activity will be funded by a TIF grant of $245,000 plus a minimum matching amount of 10% from the university.

Timeline

The project will start in the spring semester of 2002 and will terminate by fall 2002. Monitoring, per grant requirements, will continue until the end of the calendar year 2002.

Evaluation

A number of criteria will be evaluated to determine the effectiveness of the project. These include:

  • The number of wireless cards accessing the access points, both on campus and off
  • The amount of usage within the current microcomputer labs
  • The amount of traffic emanating from the student apartments

Sustainability

The hardware devices will need to be monitored routinely, both from the network side and from the radio side. Access points that fail or are damaged will need to be replaced. Security will be an increasing concern as time goes by and new and more comprehensive solutions will need to be evaluated as time passes and usage increases.
