How To... Configure Windows Messenger 5.1 from Home


These are the instructions for setting up Windows Messenger 5.1 from home. There are two parts to these instructions. The first part is downloading and installing a digital certificate. The second part is configuring Windows Messenger 5.1 for Windows XP. It is best if you use Internet Explorer for downloading the digital certificates.

  1. Login into https://rootdc2.utdallas.edu/certsrv with your own NetID.



  2. Select Request a certificate.



  3. Under CA certificate: select Current [ROOTDC2(3)].
    Under Encoding method: select DER.
    Select Download CA certificate



  4. Click Save.



  5. Save your digital certificate to your Desktop, use the default file name, click on Save.



  6. Your digital certificate is saved on your desktop. The next steps will guide you on installing the digital certificate.
    Right click
    on your digital certificate and then left click on Install PFX.



  7. You will now be importing your digital certificate using the Certificate Import Wizard, click Next.



  8. Use the default file name and path, click Next.



  9. Select Place all certificates in the following store, click Browse....



  10. Select Trusted Root Certification Authorities, click OK.



  11. Click Next.



  12. To complete the import click Finish.



  13. To install the digital certificate, click Yes.



  14. Certificate Import Wizard in now completed, click OK.



  15. Proceed to Step Two




This is the second part of instructions on how to configure Windows Messenger 5.1 for home use for Windows XP.

  1. Click Start and select Windows Messenger.



  2. Depending on your Windows XP firewall settings you might get a Windows Security Alter window. Select Unblock to allow Windows Messenger to access the internet.



  3. On Windows Messenger select Tools, then click on Options....



  4. Select the Accounts tab.



  5. Make sure that .NET Passport Account and Exchange Account do not have a check mark.
    Under SIP Communications Service Account check mark or select My contacts include users of a SIP Communications Server.
    Enter your NetID in the Sign-in Name:.
    Click Advance.



  6. SIP Communications Service Connection Configuration select Configure settings.
    Enter utdlcs02.campus.ad.utdallas.edu in the Server name or IP address:.
    Connect using: select TLS.
    Click OK.



  7. On the Options window click OK.



  8. You should now see your NetID on Windows Messenger. Click on your NetID.



  9. You are now ready to sign-in to Windows Messenger.
    Enter your Sign-in name:
    Enter your User name:
    Enter your Password:
    Click OK.
