Before you Begin

Starting with version 10.3 (Panther), MacOS X includes an 802.1x authentication client in the Internet Connect applet.

Note: At this time, the 802.1x client in the Internet Connect applet is only known to work with Apple Airport cards. If you are using a non-Airport card in your Mac, you may be unable to use the built in 802.1x client.

Step by Step Instructions

To begin setting up your 802.1x connection, click on the Airport item on your menu bar and choose "Open Internet Connect..." as shown below.

In the Internet Connect window that pops up, click on the 802.1X padlock icon at the top. If you do not have the 802.1X padlock icon like the one shown below, you can create the 802.1x option by clicking on the File menu and choosing "Create New 802.1X Connection..."

Once you are at the 802.1x configuration screen, click on the "Configuration" drop-down box and choose "Edit Configurations..." as shown below.

In the configuration window, several items will need to be set. First, change the Description field from "802.1X Configuration" to "Waterview" so as to denote it as the connection for the Waterview Park apartments.

Next, make sure the Network Port is set to "Airport". In the "User Name" field, enter your UTD NetID (make sure it is all lowercase) and enter your NetID password in the "Password" field. In the "Wireless Network" field, choose "WATERVIEW" from the available selections.

If you do not have a selection for "WATERVIEW", simply type it in as shown below. NOTE: WATERVIEW must be in ALL CAPS.

Finally, in the "Authentication" section, uncheck all options EXCEPT for PEAP as shown below. Click OK to save the configuration profile.

Once you are back at the Internet Connect window, your new Waterview profile should be selected as shown below. To connect to the network, simply click the "Connect" button.

The first time you connect to the WATERVIEW 802.1x network, you will be presented with a window like the one below asking you to confirm the identity of the network.

If the information that is presented matches the information shown below (Certificate contains 8021x.utdallas.edu and the issuer organization is RSA Data Security, Inc.), then click "Accept All". Once you have done this, the 802.1x client will always validate the identity of the network when connecting.

Once you have successfully authenticated, the Internet Connect window will show a Success message the bottom along with the amount of time you have been connected, as seen below.

If you need to perform network logins against LDAP or Active Directory on Mac OS X machines that are connected to AirUTD, this can be accomplished by assuring that you are running at least Mac OS X 10.4.6 and following the directions located here.
