VoIP Information
UTD is implementing a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service using Avaya's
IP PBX and Modular Messaging voice mail. Voice and data converge in this
service to deliver telephony over the data network. A number of issues must be addressed
in order to provide equivalent reliability to traditional telephony, including UPS
placement at all points along the data path and redundant paths where possible. The
final design envisions most UTD telephony being carried over WiFi locally and most
Telecom customers having multi-mode (Cellular/WiFI) wireless handsets. For starters,
however, Telecom is rolling out several models of Avaya handsets
that connect to the wired network.
