How To... Check Your UTD Quotas

The quota-checking method you use will depend on which quota you need to check.

You actually have two quotas, and possibly more; disk space and e-mail space are allocated separately, and staff and faculty may have access to additional employment related resources.
  • Every user has a home directory on a Unix server; this is where you would place and maintain your UTD website.
  • The initial default location for your email inbox is on an IMAP server.
  • Staff and faculty may have access to departmental and additional personal disk space on a Windows server.
  • Staff and faculty may be given an Exchange mail account in addition to or in place of the IMAP mail account.

  • To check your Unix home directory quota, type vxquota -v or quota -v , depending upon the location of your home directory, at a Unix command prompt. The resulting display will show you your usage and your quota limits.

  • Staff and faculty who have disk space on the Windows file server can use the QuotaInfo.bat batch file in the root of the P: drive at a Windows command prompt to get information on their home directory (H: drive) disk quota and usage. Users should note that if their home directory resides on any other server, this batch file will fail.

  • To check your IMAP quota, go to https://www.utdallas.edu/ir/tools/imapquota/ and enter your NetID and password. The resulting page will display your maibox usage both as a percentage, and as absolute amounts that include your allocated mailbox space.

  • You can also use an email client that has the capability of checking IMAP mailbox quotas and usage. One such client with this capability is Mulberry. Click on the Inbox, then right click and select Properties. You will see a tab or button labeled Quota, which will tell you what your quota is and how much of it is in use.

  • Staff and faculty who have Exchange accounts can check their mailbox usage within Outlook.
  1. In the Folders list, right click on Mailbox - your name (where your name in Lastname, Firstname format replaces "your name") and select Properties for Mailbox - your name.

  2. Click on the Folder Size button on the General tab.

  3. The resulting dialog box will be headed with some summary Server Data, with subfolder usage displayed in a list below. The Total Size (including subfolders) figure is your mailbox usage. Users should note that Outlook does not display what the quota limit is, but rather only how much space is in use. For information on Exchange quotas, see http://www.utdallas.edu/ir/bog/email.htm#1_2.
