Installing digital certificates for iOS 5

 

The following instructions are for installing digital certificate for iOS 5

1. Your iOS 5 device must have a UTD exchange account setup for accessing emails.  Instructions can be found at the following link. http://www.utdallas.edu/ir/how-to/iphoneexchange.htm

2. You must import your digital certificate file into your iOS 5 device.  The simplest method is to attach the certificate to an email and forward it to your UTD email address.  You can then download and install the certificate onto your iOS 5 device.

3. You will be directed to the Install Profile page, select “Install” and when prompted select “Install now”

4. You will then be prompted to “Enter the password for the certificate”,  this will be the password you created when you first created your digital certificates for encryption.  After selecting “Next” the “Profile Installed” window will display.  Select “Done” to complete the installation.

(In the Profile Installed screen it will state the Certificate is Not Trusted. Ignore this and select done to proceed to the next step)

5. Return to your iOS 5 device home page and select Settings > General > and scroll down to Profile.  You can view the insalled digital cetificate, its details, and if needed Remove it from your iOS 5 device.

(In the Profile screen it will state the Certificate is Not Trusted. Ignore this and select the General tab to complete the installation)

6. To enable digital Certificates for your UTD exchange account select Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Select your Exchange account.  You will need to turn on Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (S/MIME).  You should now be able to read encrypted emails on your iOS 5 device.

7. In order to send digitally Signed or Encrypted emails from your iOS 5 device you will have to turn on both Sign and Encrypt and select your Certificate profile.

8. When you open a new Email message in your Exchange account you will see “Encrypted” next to a padlock.  If the recipient you are emailing has digital certificates published in the GAL you will see their name in blue with a locked padlock. If the recipient does not have digital certificates published in the GAL their name will be red with an unlocked padlock.  In order to send an encrypted email to a user they must have digital certificates published in the GAL.
