How to Map Network Drives from Home

These are the instructions for mapping your network drives at work from home. These instructions can apply to XP, Vista, and Windows 7. The appearances may look different, but the processes are all the same.

  1. Open up your Start Menu, right-click on Computer and select Map Network Drive...

  2. After the Map Network Drive window is open, you can click the first pull down menu as highlighted and you can see all of your drives. Copy down any drive name that you would like to map to for the next step. When you are finished, simply click cancel to exit this window.

  3. Decide if you would like to map your network drive to connect to Allshare, the Student Directory, or the Staff Directory, and select the appropriate tab.

  1. Next, you will need to setup a VPN connection on your home computer to the UTD network. To establish a VPN connection, see How To Connect Using VPN Software.

  2. Once you have the VPN connection established on your home computer, you will need to map the network drives. Open up your Start Menu, right-click on Computer and select Map Network Drive...

  3. Once the Map Network Drive Wizard opens, you will have to enter in the drive letter and folder location of the network drive you wish to access. Leave the Reconnect at logon option unchecked. For this example, we will connect to the P: drive. Click on Connect using a different user name to proceed.

    Enter in \\campus.ad.utdallas.edu\utd\allshare to connect to the Allshare folder.

  4. A popup prompting you to authenticate will appear. Enter your username Campus\ NetID and password in their respective fields.

  5. Once you have successfully authenticated, you will see the network drive that you attempted to access.

  6. To map additional drives, simply repeat Steps 1-3.
