How to set up Remote Pharos printing from Mac Laptops in Mac OS Leopard 10.5

**NOTE:  The following instructions require you to be on the UTD computer network.  If you are on campus on CometNet2, you can complete the following instructions without modification.  If you are off campus you will need to connect to the UT Dallas computer network through the VPN client available at: https://utdvpn.utdallas.edu/. Setting up the Utility

  1. Locate Remote Printing Mac OS.dmg then double click on the dmg in order to mount it.
  2. Double click on Popup.pkg and the program installer for Pharos should launch.
  3. The install is straight forward: click next, update and continue as necessary until the installer gives you a window with a close button stating the installation was complete.
  4. Restart your computer.
  5. Click on the apple icon and go to system preferences.

  6. Click the Printer and Fax icon
  7. Click the plus sign to add a new printer.

  8. The following window should pop up:

  9. Hold down the control-key and click on the area next to the search box at the top of the window. From the dialog select Customize Toolbar

  10. A window should pop up allowing you to customize your tool bar.  Drag the Advanced icon into the tool bar so that your tool bar looks like the following image.

  11. Click the Advanced button.

  12. From the Type drag-down box select “Pharos Print Server”
  13. In order to configure the Sonora Lab Color printer follow the instructions in the following section “Color printer instructions”

Color printer instructions:

  1. In the Device URI text-field enter “popup://labpr3/SAMacWireless_Color”.
  2. In the Name text-field enter “Sonora Lab Color Printing”.
  3. In the Location text-field enter “Sonora Lab Color Printing”.
  4. Next from the Print Using drag-down box select: Select a Driver to Use.
  5. Into the search box enter HP Color LaserJet 3300 Series, select the option with the same name, then click the add button.9

  6. The Installable Options window shown above, should popup.
  7. In this window select the Yes option from the “Collation in Printer” drag-down box.
  8. Select Tray 3 as “Not Installed,” and check the Duplex Unit box.
  9. Click the continue button.
  10. Continue to the “Printing Instructions” section.
  11. In order to configure the Sonora Lab or Jonsson Lab B&W printer, follow the instructions in the following section “B&W printer instructions”

B&W printer instructions:

  1. In the Device URI text-field enter “popup://labpr3/JOMacWireless” or “popup://labpr3/SAMacWireless” depending on whether you are printing to Sonora or Jonsson.
  2. In the Name text-field enter “Sonora Lab Printing” if you are printing to the Sonora Lab or “Jonsson Lab Printing” if you are printing to the Jonsson Lab.
  3. In the Location text-field enter “Sonora Lab” or “Jonsson Lab” depending on where you are printing to.
  4. Next from the Print Using drag-down box select: Select a Driver to Use.
  5. Into the search box enter HP LaserJet 4200 Series, select the option with the same name, then click the add button.10

  6. A window shod pop-up with installable printer options.
  7. In this window check the box labeled “Tray 3”.
  8. From the drag-down box labeled “Total Memory” select “36 MB or more”
  9. Check the box labeled “Duplex Unit”
  10. Click the button labeled “Continue” now your printer should be set up.
  11. You should be able to print to any program by selecting the printer.
  12. Continue to the “Printing Instructions” section.

Printing Instructions:

  1. When printing the standard pharos popup should pop up asking for your Netid and Netid password.
  2. In order to ensure that the printing is working correctly; print out a test page. 
  3. The document will now be on the print queue, you can then go to the Sonora or Jonsson computer labs (depending on which lab you printed to) in order to release your print out at the print release stations.  Make sure you have money on your Comet Card.  The print outs will remain on the queue for twenty four hours; after that they will be deleted so you need to release your documents within a day.
  4. Enjoy remote printing!
