How To Change Your Power Options - Vista / Windows7


Using the following directions, you can change your power options in Vista or Windows7 so that you can use the Remote Desktop feature and still do tasks on your work computer.

***In order to finish setting up your desktop for Remote Access, you MUST enable remote access. Thankfully, we thought ahead and made a How-To that shows you how to do just that. Please go HERE before/after these changes have been made.***

Step 1 - Open Start and click Control Panel.

Step 2 - Under Classic View, click on and open Power Options.

Step 3 - After Power Options has been opened, the screen should appear something like this if you have a laptop. If you have a desktop, it will be slightly different. However, in either case, select "Change when the computer sleeps" and then click "Change advanced power settings".

Step 4 - There will be a window like this that appears. On the list, click to expand the following categories:

  1. Hard Disk > Turn off hard disk after. For a laptop, change the plugged in time by typing in "Never" in the blank, for a desktop, simply change the option to "Never" in the same manner. Click Apply and OK and reopen the advanced menu.
  2. Sleep > Sleep after. For a laptop, change the plugged in time by typing in "Never" in the blank, for a desktop, simply change the option to "Never" in the same manner. Click Apply and OK and reopen the advanced menu.
  3. Sleep > Hibernate after. For a laptop, change the plugged in time by typing in "Never" in the blank, for a desktop, simply change the option to "Never" in the same manner. Click Apply and OK to finish.
