How To... Connect Graphically to Unix Applications

These are the instructions for setting up the graphical user interface (GUI). There are two parts to these instructions. The first part is installing the software. The second part is configuring your connection and connecting.

  1. In order to install Cygwin, you can download it from http://www.cygwin.com/. When the file finishes downloading, double-click on it.

  2. Click on the Next button, and on the following screen, select Install from the Internet.

    internetinstall

  3. Click Next.

    clicknext

  4. Enter C:/Temp for the location of the temporary files.

  5. Select the appropriate type of connection. Select Direct Connection if you are not connecting through a proxy.

    connectiontype

  6. Select the servers you would like to get a download from.

    selectserver

  7. Wait for the files to download. After they are done, you will see the Select Packages list. Make sure that the X11 package is selected to be installed.

    selectpackages

  8. Click on the (+) next to the Net package. In the list of options, find openssh and instead of skipping it, click on the rotating arrows to select it to be installed. Click Next when it is done.

  11. When the installation is finished, create an icon on the desktop or add an icon to the Start Menu.

    createicon

  12. Proceed to Step Two.

The second part of these instructions is configuring your connection and connecting.

  1. Go to C:\cygwin\usr\X11R6\bin and start startxwin.bat. In the shell enter ssh *yournetid*@apache.utdallas.edu –X.

    startxwin

  2. Enter your password to login to apache. When you are logged in, try to start the xclock.

    loginapache

  3. This should bring up the xclock.

    xclock

  4. If the clock displays correctly (as seen above), you can start your graphical application, such as matlab (by entering “matlab” in the shell window).
