Keep your computer from sleeping or hibernating so that it is available to log into using Remote Desktop.

Jump to your platform:

Set Power Options in Windows 7

  1. Click Start, then Control Panel.
  2. In the Control Panel, change View by: to Large Icons and find Power Options.
  3. Click on Change when the computer sleeps, then click on Change advanced power settings.
  4. In the Power Options panel, expand the following sections:
    • Hard Disk

      Change the Turn off hard disk after setting to Never.

    • Sleep

      Change the Sleep after setting to Never.

      Change the Hibernate after setting to Never.

  5. Click Apply and OK

Set Power Options in Windows Vista

  1. Click Start, then Control Panel.
  2. Under Classic View, click Power Options.
  3. Click on Change when the computer sleeps, then click on Change advanced power settings.
  4. In the Power Options panel, expand the following sections:
    • Hard Disk

      Change the Turn off hard disk after setting to Never.

    • Sleep

      Change the Sleep after setting to Never.

      Change the Hibernate after setting to Never.

  5. Click Apply and OK

Set Power Options in Windows XP

  1. Click Start, then Control Panel
  2. In the Control Panel, switch to Classic View and click on Power Options.
  3. In the Power Options Properties panel, under the Power Schemes tab:
    • Change Turn off hard disks to Never
    • Change System standby to Never
  4. Under the Hibernate tab, uncheck Enable hibernation
  5. Click Apply, then OK.
