Digital Certificates: How to apply for Digital IDs for Outlook on Exchange using Internet Explorer
- Click on the Mail Format tab and uncheck the Use Microsoft Word to edit e-mail messages and check the Use Microsoft Word to read Rich Text e-mail messages box, click Apply and then OK.
If you do not do this, the encryption and signing icons will not be automatically installed on the tool bar. (Note: this option does not exist in Outlook 2007.)

- Open the following web page in Microsoft Internet Explorer. To do this cut and paste this address into the new window.
https://certs.utdallas.edu/digitalidCenter.htm
The address is case sensitive. Only click on this link if Internet Explorer is your default web browser. Otherwise, you must copy and paste this link into Internet Explorer.

- Under ENROLL. Click on for Encryption and Signing Digital ID.  You may get a request to install a program,. If you do, say Yes (Watch for the yellow bar at the top of the browser, click on it and follow the instructions).
- Enter your netid and password. This is the id/password combination you use to access the UT Dallas network. (If you enter the wrong password, you will get the message: "Digital ID cannot be issued, Status Code: A001". If you enter your information incorrectly, you may also get the message "Server Failure, Status Code: a06d")
Create and enter a challenge phrase. Do not use punctuation. (If you enter an invalid phrase, you will get an Error Status Page detailing the error. You will have to return to the Enroll page to reenter your information.)
Click on the Submit button at the bottom of the page. If you do not get this page after resolving any of the above issues, skip to #8.

- After clicking on Submit, you will get the page below. Do not stop or refresh your browser. You may get several messages about installing VeriSign components, as well as several messages warning about potential scripting errors. There may also be an error message about ActiveX controls. Answer Yes or OK to each.

- You will then get the following page with the warning message overlaying it. Answer YES.

- Next you will see a page similar to the one shown below. At this point, both of your certs are installed in your browser, but your certs have not been published to the GAL (Outlook's Global Address List.) You may do this manually or wait for it to be done by the system, usually within the hour.

Open Outlook. Now go to the next link, Using the id, to learn how to activate the features.
- If you did not receive the form to apply for the digital id, you may receive the screen below. Verify that the address field matches the one shown below. If so, you may not be the administrator on your computer and therefore can not install the digital id. Contact your departmental tech; explain that you believe that you can not install your digital id on your computer because you are not the administrator. Have them contact infosecurity@utdallas.edu for details, if necessary.
