Obtaining an External IP Address

Before a server can receive a public Internet Protocol (IP) address, the owners must do the following:

  • Update the Operating System with the current patches (and keep it updated)
  • Install anti-virus software and verify that it is updating correctly
  • Remove unnecessary applications and install the current patches for all the remaining  applications
  • Securely configure any applications that listen on an external port
  • Notify the UT Dallas Information Security Office that the server is patched and ready for a full vulnerability scan (infosecurity@utdallas.edu)
  • Register the host in server management registry database. Registry Database
  • Document the University business need for an external server and why the existing infrastructure cannot be used.  External IP Request Form. The written justification must be signed by your Dean (or Director).   Send the letter via campus mail to Information Security, MS JO43.
  • After a formal review process, you will receive notification from the UT Dallas Information Security Office about your request for a public IP address
