Spring Break Coding Camps @ UT Dallas : March 9-13

Dallas area families, serious schedule conflict has happened for 2015 Spring Break & it is beyond our control: Most ISDs/schools in Dallas area observe March 9-13 as Spring Break, but UT Dallas has historically kept its schedule in sync with UT Austin & the schedule shows March 16-20 :-( Not many classrooms or instructors are available during March 9-13. However, I managed to find a few rooms in SPN building – in addition to all the camps listed below, we will run Level 0 ScratchJr camp for K-2 graders too.

Camp fee: $75 (5 half-days), $150 (5 full-days).

We have partnered with Aloha Mind Math Allen to offer special coding camps at their location (1420 W. Exchange Parkway, Building A, Suite 140, Allen, TX 75013). We plan to run two 1/2 day camps for Elementary kids and full day camp for middle school students. Children can be dropped as early as 8:30am and can be picked up as late as 5pm. We are going to limit each camp to max 6 kids. In other words, each instructor will have max 6 kids – it will enable each camper to get a lot of personal attention. Full-day camp fee will be $200 & half-day camp will be $100. Each camper should bring a laptop, lunch and snacks every day.

Level 0 (K-2 graders)

ExploreCodingTools (9am-12noon)

Level 1 (3-5 graders)

MIT Scratch (1-4pm)

Level 2 (6-8 graders)

CMU Alice & JavaScript (9am-4pm)

We have also planned to run several full-day or half-day workshops @ Coppell office facility (735 Plaza Blvd., Suite 210, Coppell, TX  75019). Full-day workshop fee will be $40 for each day & half-day workshop fee will be $20. You can find the detailed descriptions @ utd.edu/k12/desc. Note that Level 2 workshops should be taken in a sequence (Alice –> JavaScript –> Java).

Registration may be closed early if we get too many registrations. In the other extreme, workshops may be cancelled if we do not get 10 registrations for each day.

We have also decided to go out of town for UT Dallas Spring break (March 16-20) and offer several half-day & full-day coding camps in several other Texas cities! So, if you have friends in Austin, Houston, Galveston or Corpus Christi, please pass ON the information and encourage them to enroll. If your school observes Spring Break during March 16-20 & several students are interested in our camps, let us know – we will be happy to work with you and arrange a few camps!

Coding camps @ other Texas cities : March 16-20

Big picture: utd.edu/k12

Camp fee: $100 (5 half-days), $200 (5 full-days).

Advance registration will end on Feb 10th, then fee will increase to $150 & $300 respectively. All are week-long camps, morning session will run 9am-12noon & afternoon session will run 1-4pm. Students can arrive as early as 8:30am and leave as late as 5pm. Early drop-off before 8:30am and late pick-up after 5pm can be done with advance planning & will involve additional fee.

Even with our reasonable fees, low income families may find it difficult to pay – we strongly believe that attending a camp should NOT involve a serious financial decision. So, we offer 50% discount for children that qualify for reduced rate meals in schools. Forward the documentation to csk12@utdallas.edu to get the discount code to use during registration. We welcome school teachers to join us at a very special rate! Email us a copy of any official document/badge that shows your current employment & we will send you a discount code to use.

We do understand that unexpected things happen and you may need to cancel the reservation at times – we have a very lenient policy: $10 cancellation fee will apply for each transaction irrespective of the total amount. Pro-rated fee will apply once the camp has started. We would like to offer all the camps at the “requested” locations. However, if a camp does not make the minimum registration numbers (typcially 10 or so) by advance registration deadline or the facilities run out of capacity, we may not be able to run all the camps in requested locations – you will be offered to switch to another camp/location or get full refund – we hope to make the final decision 2-3 weeks before Spring break. We will add more facilities if we get lots of registrations. So, please share the information with your friends/contacts/PTA and ask others to register as well.

Each participant needs to bring a laptop with WiFi capability & snacks (and lunch for full-day camps). We have specified the grade-level recommendations below for each camp, however we observe open-door policy & we do not deny admission to our camps based on age or grade level. We expect the families to decide the best camp for each child – we will allow the students to switch camps on the first day if possible.
