Information for Visitors

The University of Texas at Dallas is a public research university, and is part of the University of Texas System.  The Libraries of the University of Texas at Dallas are open to the public.

McDermott Library Information

    Hours vary during the semester and over intersession periods.  Changes are posted on the Library Webpages.

    If you are interested in a personal tour of McDermott Library, please contact McDermott Library Instruction Services .
  • Meeting space
    McDermott Library is unable to provide meeting space for outside groups.  The use of space within the University by outside groups is arranged by the President’s Office.  An outside group will need a University sponsor.  The sponsor should contact the President’s Office at (972) 883-2201.

    • McDermott Library contains a number of collections.   
    • Most materials from the Main Stacks and Leisure Reading collections are available to borrow from the Library.  Materials from the Reference, Journals, Special Collections, and Microform collections must be used in the Library.
    • Checkout Policies for Visitors - Visitors are encouraged to apply for a TexShare card at their local library.  Visitors must be at least 18 years of age and present a valid driver’s license, a Texas identification card, a TexShare card, or a UTD Libraries Friends card to borrow materials. 

Using the Library

The Library Catalog provides information about the books, journals, media, and other items available in the Library. It is available to everyone.

Electronic Resources.  Other electronic resources including journal article databases, ebooks, and ejournals are included in the catalog.  Access to these sources by visitors is only available from on-campus.  Off-campus access to these resources is restricted because of legal agreements.   If you have questions concerning access to electronic resources, please contact Ask a Librarian Services.

Special Collections.  The Library has several important research collections including the History of Aviation, the Wineburgh Philatelic Research Library, and the Louise B. Belsterling collection.  For information about these materials, visit the Special Collections Webpages.

U.S. Government and Texas State Documents.  The Eugene McDermott Library has been a federal depository library since 1972 and a Texas state depository since 1974.  Additional information is available on the Government Document Library Guide.  The depository materials are supplemented by electronic and microform materials particularly in the area of legislative documents and statistical resources. 

Photocopying and Printing.  The Libraries have black/white and color copying and printing equipment available.  There is a charge for these services.  The Library does not have a cashier to make change.

Scanning to email
Library copy machines have a scanning option where you can scan materials and send them to your email free of charge.

Library computers.  The Library has 2 computers available to visitors so they can access electronic resources.  The computers do not allow general Internet use or email services.  Visitors  must be at least 18 years of age and present a valid driver’s license or Texas identification card to use the equipment.

Parking instructions
The campus Information Center is on University Parkway and is open:  Monday-Friday  7:00am - 2:00am; Saturday & Sunday  2:30pm - 2:00am.  The Center provides temporary parking passes and loading zone passes.  Metered parking is available on the north and south sides of McDermott Library ($1 per hour maximum).
