Interlibrary Loan FAQ

WHAT IS INTERLIBRARY LOAN?
Interlibrary loan supplements University of Texas at Dallas Libraries collections by requesting items from other institutions. This service is available to UTD faculty, staff, and currently enrolled students.

WHAT MAY I REQUEST?
BOOKS. Books not owned by the University of Texas at Dallas Libraries may be borrowed if a library can be located that will lend it. Books owned by the University of Texas at Dallas Libraries but checked out or on reserve, or textbooks (any title that is currently used for any course at UTD) cannot be ordered through Interlibrary Loan Services. Libraries seldom loan rare books, dissertations, or reference works.

PERIODICALS. Libraries will supply a photocopy of a particular article rather than loaning the journal.

HOW DO I SUBMIT AN INTERLIBRARY LOAN REQUEST? All requests are submitted electronically.

For BOOKS, supply the author, title, publisher, and date of publication using the Request a Book button.

For ARTICLES from journals, book chapters, or conference papers use the buttons on your main menu to get to the appropriate screen. If complete information is not provided, the request may be delayed.

HOW LONG BEFORE I HAVE THE MATERIAL REQUESTED?
Borrowing books from other libraries can take from a few days to several months, depending upon availability. The average time is about two weeks.
Photocopy requests are sent electronically to the University of Texas at Austin Library. If UT Austin owns the journal, a photocopy may be available within two working days. Otherwise, the requested material may take a few additional days to several weeks to arrive from another library.

HOW MUCH DOES INTERLIBRARY LOAN COST?
There is usually no charge for borrowing a book. The interlibrary loan staff will notify you if the material cannot be borrowed for free. All charges for books are the responsibility of the patron. Interlibrary loan charges may be paid at the Bursar's Office or at the Callier Center Library.

There is no charge for photocopied journal articles.

HOW WILL I BE NOTIFIED WHEN MY MATERIAL ARRIVES?
An automatic email will be sent to your UTD email account when your Interlibrary Loan materials are available.

WHERE DO I PICK-UP INTERLIBRARY LOAN MATERIAL?
Books are picked up at the McDermott Library Circulation Desk or Callier Library. Books circulate using the library's automated system which means that you must have your UTD Comet card to pick up interlibrary loan materials.
You will be notified by email when your article(s) are available for electronic pick-up.

WHAT IS THE LOAN PERIOD?
The loan period is at the discretion of the loaning library, but is generally 4 weeks. In addition, the loaning library may impose restrictions, such as library use only or no renewals. If a renewal is allowed you may request it through your Interlibrary Loan account online. The loaning library grants permission for renewals, not UTD library staff.

ARE THERE ANY FINES?
Fines are assessed for late return of loaned materials. To avoid fines, return all ILL materials to the Circulation Desk or the Callier Library. If you lose or heavily damage an ILL item, you be assessed fees/fines from the lending library.
