Biographical Sketch

The Civil Air Transport (CAT)/Air America Small Collections is composed of individual collections that are too small to support themselves on their own. Most of these collections are anywhere between one to three folders in size, or consist of a single object. This is an artificial collection, with the individual component collections identified by the name of the Collection Number and name of the subject of the materials.

The collections presented here encompass the full history of CAT/Air America, from its early days in China to its participation in the evacuation during the fall of Saigon, South Vietnam in 1975. The collections were contributed by a number of sources including Civil Air Transport and Air America Personnel, United States Government Employees, Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Operatives and Assets, and civilians involved with CAT/Air America or located in the Far East. Many of the collections were donated by the dependents (spouses, relatives, or children) of the subjects.

Each individual collection contains information about the donor, the subjects, as well as a brief historical sketch outlining the collection subject’s connection to CAT/Air America (where that information was available). Key to compiling these background sketches was the master list of CAT/Air America Employees found in the Jerry Fink Collection. The rest of the information was discovered through internet searches, obituaries, or the contents of the collection itself.

James B. McGovern was born on February 4, 1922 in Elizabeth, New Jersey. In World War II he joined the United States Army Air Corps, and was sent with the 14th Air Force to China. There he earned the nickname “Earthquake McGoon” for his similarity to a character from the Lil’ Abner comic strip. In 1954, McGovern and several other CAT pilots were contracted to take C-119 aircraft to Indochina and fly aerial reply supply mission for the French forces besieged at Dien Bien Phu.

On May 6, 1954, the C-119 piloted by McGovern and his co-pilot Wallace A. Buford was damaged by ground fire from a 37mm anti-aircraft gun. McGovern nursed the wounded plane, but was force to make a crash landing behind enemy lines. Both McGovern and Buford, along with two French paratroopers were killed. Two others onboard survived the crash.

In 2002 remains were recovered from an unmarked grave in Laos, and in 2006 they were identified as those of James B. McGovern. On May 24, 2007 McGovern’s remains were interned in Arlington Nation Cemetery.
