Abstract
Fred Walker worked as a pilot for General Claire L. Chennault’s Civil Air Transport (CAT) from 1949-1950 returning to CAT in 1953. He flew sorties out of Haiphong and Hanoi, Vietnam to support the French during the battle of Dien Bien Phu. Starting in the 1960s, Walker assumed administrative duties for Air America, Inc. in Laos and Thailand in the position as the Manager Flying Department (MFD). There he supervised and directed the activities of about 1600 pilots. During this time, he played a crucial role in building the Air America’s Laotian operation. On April 29, 1975, during the Fall of Saigon which forced Air America to leave Southeast Asia, Capt. Fred Walker flew the final scheduled fixed wing flight out of Saigon for Air America in a Douglas C-47.

Literary Rights Statement

Permission to publish material from this collection in any form, current or future, must be obtained from the Special Collections Department, Eugene McDermott Library, The University of Texas at Dallas.

Provenance Statement

The Fred Walker Papers were donated to the History of Aviation Collection, Special Collections Department, Eugene McDermott Library, The University of Texas at Dallas, by Patricia F. Walker, MD on April 20, 2007.

Note to the Researcher

The materials in this collection are mainly in good condition except for part of the clippings and magazines in Series V., the maps in Series VIII., and the radio messages in Series III., Subseries 2. Clippings and magazines show signs of water damage and may contain dust and mold. Researchers sensitive to these agents should wear protective devices.

The maps are in part heavily used because of the markings and flight information written on them. Especially the topographical charts of Laos in Box 68, Folder 3 and 7 (Dien Bien Phu) all contain operational markings. NOTE: Handle with care, since the markings could be easily wiped off. The latter is also available in digital format.

World Aeronautical Chart (617) was scanned in sections as well as photocopied onto acid-free paper. The cloth maps are stored separately in an oversize box. Those materials that were too fragile or damaged to handle were photocopied onto acid-free paper as well. One poster in Ephemera Series VII. is heavily damaged, fragile, shows water stains, has parts missing, and is torn. DO NOT remove from Mylar Sheet! This item is also available in digital format.

Some of the radio messages where held together with rubber bands that tore into the onionskin paper. The photographs, depending on their size, were housed in archival polypropylene sleeves and larger images interleaved in folders with acid-free paper. A large part of the color photographs show signs of fading. Picture frames were discarded. Staples and paper clips were removed and replaced with coated paperclips where necessary. The tips of the matches in the Memorabilia Series were cut off because of their potential fire hazard. All memorabilia, except the three model aircraft, are either stored in special memorabilia boxes or oversized boxes.

Items containing sensitive information, like social security numbers, were photocopied onto acid-free paper and redacted. The originals were moved to a different box. The latter are for staff view only.

Material Removed List

3.75 linear ft. (three record center boxes) of duplicate materials, clippings and damaged documents that were photocopied onto acid-free paper as well as private documents and photographs that were not pertinent to the collection were de-accessioned and sent back to the donor.

Biographical Sketch

Frederick “Fred” Frye Walker was born the second out of three sons to Dr. Isaac Chandler Walker, a physician, and Jesse Helen Walker, the daughter of George Hancock Walker and Nellie (Bennet) Walker from Fryeburg, Maine, on November 10, 1919 in Brookline, Massachusetts. His older brother was Chandler Colby and the younger George Brewster. Fred grew up in Fryeburg, Maine and attended Newton Senior High School in Newton, Massachusetts from which he graduated in 1937. From a very early age, he was interested in flying, and at the age of 16 started his career in aviation during the winter of 1935. The following spring, he soloed for the first time. Starting in 1937, Fred Walker attended various aeronautical schools and graduated with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the Aero Industries Technical Institute in Los Angeles, CA in 1941. In 1940, he worked as a B-24 Liberator senior wing inspector for Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corporation.

At the end of 1942, he signed up as an Aviation Cadet with the U.S. Army Air Forces and graduated in the class of 44C at Douglas Air Force Base at Douglas, Arizona in March of 1944. His first assignment was to a Troop Carrier transition school where he received his training as a pilot in the Douglas C-47 Skytrain. Upon completion of his training, Walker was sent overseas to the China-Burma-India Theater (CBI) where he not only flew C-47s, but also Curtiss C-46 Commandos. Among his first assignments in the CBI were airdrop and resupply missions to support the West African Division operating in the Arakan Hill Tract on the India-Burma border. Shortly thereafter, Fred Walker was transferred to China with the First Cargo Squadron, 14th Air Force, where he served the remainder of the war. His main mission was to resupply various fighter and bomber groups based in China which included about 60 crossings of the Himalayas, flying the “Hump.” In October of 1945, Walker returned to the United States and on February 26, 1946, he was honorably discharged from the services with the rank of First Lieutenant. His decorations include two Distinguished Flying Crosses, four Air Medals and a Presidential Unit Citation for extraordinary and meritorious achievements while flying in the China-Burma-India Theater.

From March until October of 1948, when the company had to file for bankruptcy, Fred Walker worked as a Captain and later as the Chief Pilot for the New England Central Airway System, Inc. Not very long after leaving the company, he applied for a pilot position with General Claire L. Chennault’s Civil Air Transport (CAT) that was based in Shanghai at the time flying C-46 Commandos until the later part of 1949. Due to CAT’s financial situation, Walker accepted a position as co-pilot and stayed with the organization until spring of 1950 when his services were no longer needed because of the deteriorating situation of the Nationalist Chinese Government. In short succession, Walker worked for Northeast Airlines as a First Officer in a Douglas DC-3, starting in the same position and later as a Pilot for Slick Airways until spring of 1954 when he was furloughed due to a reduction in staff.

Again, Fred Walker applied for a position with CAT, which later turned into Air America, Inc., with which he spent the next twenty-one years of his professional life. From 1954 until 1962, Walker flew scheduled and charter flights out of Taiwan to Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Hong Kong, and other destinations in Southeast Asia. He flew Curtiss and Douglas aircraft and C-119 Flying Boxcars out of Haiphong and Hanoi in the battle of Dien Bien Phu.

In 1960, Fred Walker was transferred to the Kingdom of Laos for the next nine years as a C-47 Captain for Air America and was promoted to Assistant Chief Pilot and later to Regional Chief Pilot in 1964. In this position, Walker was responsible for supervising and directing activities of pilots and bases in Vientiane, Laos; Udorn and Bangkok, Thailand; Phnom-Penh, Cambodia; and Saigon, South Vietnam. He also played a key role in building Air America’s Laotian operation, evaluating both the De Havilland C-7A Caribou and the Fairchild C-123 Providers for their suitability on short take-off and landing (STOL) strips in mountainous terrain. He also acted as an investigator for aircraft accidents. From 1961 to 1971, Walker was appointed as Designated Check Pilot for the Chinese Civil Aviation Administration (CCAA) conducting proficiency tests for aircraft and issuance of pilot licenses and certificates.

From 1964 to 1969 based from Vientiane, Laos, Walker held the position of an Assistant Base Manager and Manager Flying Department (MFD) with Air America, Inc. and for the next two years, he continued to serve as MFD in Bangkok. Overseeing up to 1600 employees, he was responsible for the operation of all of the company’s departments, such as Flight Operations, Maintenance, Traffic, Transportation, Personnel, and overseeing the construction and inspection of airfields throughout the Kingdom of Laos. During this time, Fred Walker continued to fly countless missions both involving humanitarian aid – food and medical supplies – and military support – airlifting troops, cargo, and ammunition. In addition to that, Walker was General Vang Pao’s personal pilot in Long Tieng. The last four years prior to the Fall of Saigon in April of 1975 he went back to scheduled and charter services for Air America throughout Southeast Asia.

On April 29, 1975, during the fall of Saigon, Fred Walker flew the last and final fixed wing flight for Air America out of Saigon in a Douglas C-47 with First Officer, Capt. S.A. Smith and about twenty Air America Filipino mechanics on board. Since the original flight plan to Brunei could not be kept because of insufficient fuel supply, Walker landed in U-tapao, Thailand. There the Base Commander, Colonel Austin, advised him to fly to Bangkok arriving there at 9:00 PM local time. Considering the circumstances, Walker commented the events with the words: “All in all, it was quite a successful operation.”

After being released from Air America, Inc. on June 30, 1975, Walker worked for Pyramid Airlines, Cairo, Egypt, from September 1977 until August 1978. He retired at the age of sixty-five having logged almost 25,000 hours of total flight time in eighteen different types of single and multi engine aircraft.

Frederick Frye Walker died on Sunday, February 14, 1999 at the age of seventy-nine in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers and his first wife, Phyllis Lane Walker. His family includes stepson, Andrew Jackson Fink, IV; daughters Susan Brewster Walker, Patricia Frye Walker, MD, Elizabeth Colby Walker Anderson, Nancy Lane Walker-Piela; son Frederick Frye Walker, Jr.; sons-in-law James Darrell Anderson and David Piela; grandsons Paul Raymond Anderson and Nicholas Walker Anderson and his former second wife, Sally Lee Ghang Hwa Walker.

Scope and Content

This collection contains documents, records, correspondence, memoranda, inter-office routing slips, office notes, reports, radio messages (incoming, outgoing, and XOXO), application files, maps, approach procedures and charts, manuals and handbooks, airfield directories, clippings, magazine articles, press releases, newsletters, Notice to Air Men (NOTAM), other information circulars, blueprints, photographs, moving images, ephemera, memorabilia, and other materials that were created and/or collected during Fred Walker’s life and active career with Civil Air Transport (CAT) and Air America, Inc. The  Fred Walker Papers are housed in fifty-four manuscript boxes, thirty-one oversize boxes of various sizes, and three airplane models totaling 53.81 linear feet.

Before the collection arrived at the CAT/Air America Archives the donor, daughter Patricia F. Walker, MD, weeded documents of a personal nature to the family out of the collection. It was the late Fred Walker’s declared wish to pull any incriminating documentation of former Air America employees which was strictly followed by the donor. The heirs are still in possession of a large amount of film materials and Walker’s flight logs. The collection arrived in fair condition and was well organized regarding the entire corpus of office files so that the archivist only had to impose order for the rest of the collection. The CAT/Air America Archives already were in possession of a folder containing clippings and some photographs of Fred Walker’s papers in Small Collection Box 6. These materials were incorporated into the main collection.

The archivist identified ten series with the first series being the Personal Papers Series which is further organized into six subseries: 1. Biographical Information, 2. Education and Training, 3. Military Records, 4. Correspondence, 5. Private Papers, and 6. Social Activities.

Subseries 1. consists of a biography of Isaac Chandler Walker, Fred Walker’s father, and various narratives and curriculum vitae composed by Fred Walker himself.

Subseries 2. contains a questionnaire of the final examination test on airplane design, notes on aircraft specifications and airplane design, design sketches and a blueprint of the Falcon-Walker model as well as notes on chemistry, college algebra, and descriptive geometry, and of ground school certificates and Walker’s training records.

Subseries 3. include questionnaires, qualification data sheets, correspondence regarding commission and appointment as reserve officer, exams, flight records of students, special and general orders, medical records, and Walker’s separation qualification records from the Army of the United States.

Subseries 4. consists of personal correspondence sent and received, letters between Walker and CAT and Air America, both as an employee and to friends. Of particular interest are the three folders of letters and other documents between Walker and Dave Hickler pertaining to the latter’s attempt to secure retirement benefits under the Civil Service Retirement Act with the Civil Service Commission; letters between Felix Smith and Walker regarding Hugh Marsh’s aircraft crash; Air America letter to Walker from Nov. 14, 1975 stating Walker's release from the company, and between Walker and Shackleton Ltd. about the export and transfer of a R.A.F. surplus Spitfire airplane. Some of the letters contain photographic images, memorabilia, and ephemera.

Subseries 5. contains materials regarding memoranda pertaining to the evacuation flight from Saigon, personal correspondence to and from Walker commenting on the events, a narrative of the chain of events from April 15 through 30, 1975, a list of evacuated aircraft, clippings, telegrams, flight schedules, notes, reports, and other office forms. Further materials are Walker’s flight crew qualification records, CAT flight time records, monthly movement and travel reports, flight time work sheets in his position as Manager Flying Department and Regional Chief Pilot, radio messages, flight time logs, medical records, payment slips, Walker’s application for an aviation safety inspector position, various pilot, residents, and other certificates, passports, contract with CAT, insurance policies, Walker’s disposition regarding financial support of family members, and his testament.

Subseries 6. mirrors Walker’s membership in different organizations not only in CAT and Air America but also with the China-Burma-India Association, the Generals Ward and Chennault Post No. 1 China, the Lao-Hmong American Coalition, and the Hump Pilot Association among others. Materials are membership directories, newsletters, clippings, reunion kits, correspondence, and ephemera.

The second series is the Civil Air Transport (CAT) Series that reflects Walker’s career with this organization. This series is subdivided in six subseries: 1. Contract and Orders, 2. Correspondence, 3. Ephemera, 4. Memoranda, 5. Miscellaneous, and 6. Operations.

Subseries 1. contains the Colonial Air Navigation Order regulating all aircraft approach and departure, air traffic control, and contract between CAT, Inc. and the French commandant’s office for Indo China for flying activities at Dien Bien Phu. This document is written in French.

Subseries 2. includes correspondence sent and received from Walker to others concerning work performance, memoranda regarding Helio Courier pilot training and other operational topics. Noteworthy are letters from Gen. Claire L. Chennault regarding CAT operations as well as a memorandum about CAT’s move of operations to Taipei. Letters contain radio messages, inter-office routing slips, and notes. Further materials are minutes from pilots’ meeting, clippings, memoranda from Walker in the position as Traffic Inspector, listings of salary scales, and general operational issues.

Subseries 3. contains CAT international fight time tables.

Subseries 4. includes memoranda covering operational issues of CAT’s flight crew, notes, Operational Circulars,  Notice to Air Men, NOTAM, and  Trouble Shooter,  CAT, flight schedules, instrument departure procedures, charts, and maps.

Subseries 6. contains memoranda, forms, flight schedules, and a CAT Operations manual.

The third series is the Air America Series and is the largest and most important one which is further organized into seven subseries: 1. Department Files, 2. Messages, 3. Notice to Air Men, NOTAM, 4. Operations, 5. Personnel Files, 6. Reports, and 7. Blueprint. Especially subseries 1.-2. and 4.-7. represent the day-to-day operation of Air America, Inc. not only as a commercial airline, but also as a contractor for the United States government, respectively the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

Furthermore, the Department Files give an excellent overview about the internal structure of Air America. Departments represented are Vice President Operation (VPO), Vice President Flight Operations, (VPFO), General Manager Laos (GML), Regional Chief Pilot (RCP), Director Flying Division (DFD), Manager Flying Department (MFD), Manager Flying Department/VTE (MFD/VTE), Manager Flying Department/BKK (MFD/BKK), Manager Flying Standard Department (MFSD), as well as numerous other smaller departments. Two folders in this category are dealing with Lima Sites and one folder with other topics such as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Identifier or airport information.

A large number of the memoranda were composed by Walker in his various positions as Chief Pilot, Regional Chief Pilot, and Manager Flying Department.

Subseries 1. materials are radio messages, memoranda, inter-office routings slips, notes, and other office forms, various operations circulars, NOTAM, photographs, travel orders, non-office related correspondence, clippings, reports, charts, attendants and personnel rosters, flight crew time and passenger manifest sheets, guidelines, sketches of localities, XOXO messages, radio message on comments on smuggling narcotics, Mad River Project personnel rosters, flight time analysis, daily and monthly activity reports, flight crew manning rosters, agendas, safe hand slips, flight training charts, incident reports, directories, flight crew designation lists, condolence letter, ephemera, minutes, and a Contract between the United States of America and Air America, Inc.

Subseries 2. of equal importance are the radio messages themselves and particularly the XOXO messages dealing with aircraft and personnel accidents and incidents. Materials are aeronautical radio messages incoming, aeronautical message draft, XOXO messages, inter-office routing slips, and notes. These messages well support the department files of the previous subseries.

Topics are related to personnel matters, travel, expenses, flight crew training, aircraft maintenance and movement, as well as other office business, and accidents and incidents in the case of the XOXO files. The latter are significant, since they give a detailed account about the incident regarding ten code, aircraft type, time, location, people involved, damage, nature of accident, weather conditions, and which measures were taken by the investigators or whether “customers,” CIA personnel, were present.

In order to better understand and decode these messages, documents have been photocopied from various folders within this collection and accumulated in the Appendix accompanying this finding aid. Of interest are two incoming messages: one regarding a political meeting with General Vang Pao, the king, and other not further specified governmental representatives, the other with Pierre Salinger coordinating a visit for President Lyndon B. Johnson and the First Lady at Site T09.

Subseries 3. contains NOTAMs that cover a variety of topics from survival equipment, safety measures for fixed and rotor wing aircraft, aircraft and airfield maintenance and service, landing sites, broadcasting information, flight operating procedures, contracts, administration, gross weight limitations, per diem, accident reporting, personnel matters, flight crew training, flight planning and reporting procedures, various airplane programs, and other topics.

Subseries 4. comprises the Air America operator manual draft and manuals for the Southeast Asia (SEA) branch of the organization, administrative manuals with complete listings of job titles, memo and radiogram abbreviations, handbook and manual for Manager Flying Department (MFD), the latter gives a full job description of this position. Noteworthy are a pilot alphabetical list and a pilot chronological list stating name, date of employment/termination starting with Felix Smith in Dec. 18, 1946 to Owen Gosset, Nov. 3, 1966. This list also mentions flight navigators and flight engineers.

Further materials are operations circular, personnel rosters, correspondence, and the constitution, by-laws, proposed working agreement, and the final draft of the Agreement between Air America, Inc. and The Far East Pilots Association (FEPA), Air Asia aircraft log, directories from Udorn and Vientiane, notes and listings on aircraft status, business addresses.

The next large batch of materials in this subseries deals with flight crew, flight time, and flight training. Materials are attendance/leave rosters, ledger, check-out listings, flight crew designators, licenses expiration dates lists, notes, Mad River Project personnel roster, pilot planning manning reports, memoranda, flight time charts, personnel strength listings, daily flight schedules for Saigon, Udorn, and Vientiane and especially the Last Schedule Saigon from Apr. 28-29, 1975, and exams and questionnaires, study programs, instructor’s guide, notes concerning manning requirements, and photographs.

The final batch deals with general information, notes, radio charts, and reports. Materials code signs of airfields, Thailand STOL Site Data, and guidelines. The notes were created by Walker and cover topics like landings sites, memoranda published, and projects assigned to personnel.

Subseries 5. the personnel files refer to applications sent to Air America, Inc. and often directly to Walker as MFD. Though they do only represent a fraction of the company’s flight personnel they are a great source of what kind of individuals considered working for the organization, since they mention the educational and professional background of the applicant. Not all were eventually hired, but these documents can also be used for genealogy research purposes because of the family background information.

Materials are the formal application form, photographs, notes, inter-office routing slips, radio messages, memoranda, personnel action forms, and correspondence. Further materials are personnel rosters, clippings, ephemera, memoranda evaluation reports. About ten folders contain XOXO messages, correspondence, certificates, personnel request forms, applications, inter-office routing slips, flight time reports, notes, pilot trip reports, and aircraft accident reviews listed by pilots initials and/or last name.

Subseries 6. contains various reports and their supporting documentation. Materials are memoranda, inter-office routing slips, notes, and radio messages. Topics are personnel movement, travel reports, pilot qualification reports, and other business related topics.

Subseries 7. contains one item, a blue print depicting the layout of the Ban Na Thene airstrip.

The fourth series is the Civil Career Series and deals with Walker’s employment with New England Central Airways System, Inc., Slick Airways, Inc., Arax Airlines, Inc., and Pyramid Airlines before and after he joined CAT/Air America. Materials are newsletters, annual reports, flight operations and operator’s manuals, correspondence, ephemera, photographs, Walker’s pilot’s license for Pyramid Airlines in Arabic, various charts and brochures dealing with survival in the desert or navigation, logs, camp information sheets, Walker’s notes and diary entries regarding airstrip information, and sketches.

The fifth series is the Publication Series which is further organized in seven subseries: 1. Airfield Directory, 2. Approach Procedures, 3. Clippings, 4. General Publications, 5. Magazines and Newspapers, 6. Manuals, and 7. Press Releases.

Subseries 1. and 2. are an excellent source of reference that provide detailed information about airports, airfields, and landing strips in Southeast Asia relevant for pilots during their approach and departure procedures.

Subseries 3. contains clippings that reflect the political situation in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War era and comment and inform on the different political parties - the Pathet Lao and the Hmong under the leadership of Gen. Vang Pao - their political point of view and their success or defeat on the battle field, the role of Air America, Inc. in search and rescue or famine relief missions, reports on aircraft accidents and social life of major cities, such as Bangkok or the high society like the Royal Family of Laos, and articles about the Hmong refugees, their tradition, and their social status in Laos and the United States.

The clippings also support the department files and messages regarding the public information provided by the media of any given day. Intermingled with the clippings are maps, ephemera, memoranda, various operations circulars and newsletters, directories, procedures, flight schedules, notes, correspondence, radio and XOXO messages, maps of drop sites, photographs, and many other small forms of publications.

Subseries 4. contains advertisement and public relation materials for various aircraft types, the Chinese Civil Aviation Code and Civil Air Regulations of the Republic of China and the Commonwealth of Australia, Department of Civil Aviation publication referring to air navigation and commercial pilot training and employment in Australia. The topics covered in the essays and the magazines are Meo or Hmong culture, United States air intelligence, the CIA, to name a few and a wide variety of aviation related publications. The newsletters are publications of the Federal Aeronautic Agency (FAA) dealing with flight safety.

Subseries 5. includes an article about Robert E. Rousselot in Golden Jet and Tourist Daily for Hong Kong and Macao as well as the magazines  Life and  Bangkok Post/World Supplement.

Subseries 6. contains manuals for the following aircraft types: Beech Ten-Two and Volpar Turbo Beech, Curtiss-Wright C-46 Commando, De Havilland Canada, DHC-4 Caribou, USAF Series C-7A Caribou, Douglas C-47 Skytrain, Fairchild C-123K Provider, Helio Courier, Pilatus Porter PC-6, North American AT-6 Texan, and manuals for turboprop aircraft engines, airplane operating limitations, instrument flying, maintenance, navigation, and weather.

Subseries 7. contains radio messages with topics about Lao Air Force Gen. Thaoma and the bombing on Vientiane, combat, Pathet Lao, a new anti-collision device for aircraft, Winston Churchill, American Ambassador Maxwell D. Taylor, and aircraft accidents.

The sixth series is the Miscellaneous Files Series. Walker filed numerous forms of publication regarding any kind of topic under this title in his collection. This series is comparable to Series V, Subseries 3. in scope and content and are substituting the latter well. Materials are clippings, office and private correspondence, notes, flight plans and schedules, air passenger manifest, ephemera, memoranda, cartoons and funnies, reports, newsletters, photographs, operation circulars, maps, radio messages, XOXO messages, listings, various office forms, sketches and charts, and Walker’s personal papers.

Of interest is the Aircraft Accident Report: Lockheed Constellation 1049H, N9740/, Slick Airways, Inc. San Francisco, California, Feb. 3, 1963, an article titled  Amelia Earhart a Spy?, and a cartoon depicting Mao Zedong eating Laos with comments from U.S.A., the United Nations Organisation (UNO), and India in Laotian with English translation.

The seventh series is the Ephemera Series and comprises awards, currencies, Laotian to English translation pages of a dictionary, business cards from Walker and others either related to CAT or third parties, book review, Laotian calendar, pilot certificates, charts, checkbooks, flyers, identification cards, invitations, maps, and pamphlets.

Of particular interest are the stationary, luggage tags, stickers, flight ticket envelopes, passenger tickets and baggage checks, timetables and souvenir booklets used by CAT as an airline, three envelopes sent to Walker while in Saigon that were returned as “Post closed” from end of April and beginning of May, 1975, and a 25" x 19.5" colored propaganda poster from 1954 suggesting to the North Vietnamese population to move over the 17° parallel to South Vietnam.

The eighth series is the Maps Series that is further organized in two subseries: 1. Military and 2. Civil with the former being the more important one regarding the inherent flight information and their focus on Southeast Asia. Some of the maps contain flight route markings and calculations.

Materials are aeronautical approach charts, administrative maps, enroute charts, low and high altitude charts, flight planning charts, topographical maps, weather radar maps, world aeronautical charts, global laurel navigation charts, jet navigational charts, operational navigation charts, special air operations charts, tactical loran charts, joint operations graphic (air) charts, cloth charts, and pilotage charts. Noteworthy are the topographical charts of Laos in Box 68, Folder 3 and Folder 7 (Dien Bien Phu) that all contain operational markings, as well as the Pacific Airway plotting chart containing flight route markings.

The ninth series is the Memorabilia Series and include among other small items a mounted print of Lindbergh’s flight from New York to Paris, handcrafted embroidered purses, CAT business cards issued to Walker, CAT wings, and stick pins, Walker’s pilot shoulder pads and CAT flight cap, match boxes with CAT emblem, banners, Walker’s name sign, and 31x8x1" Air America wings carved of wood as well as three model aircraft, a Douglas DC-4 B-1002, a Curtiss C-46 Commando B-130, and an unidentified model.

The tenth and last series is the Media Series which is further organized in three subseries: 1. Photographs, 2. Videos, and 3. Film.

Subseries 1. has about 450 images and depicts various types of aircraft (for detailed listings, consult the Index of Aircraft Photographs), aircraft crashes, like the crash of Chinese Army General Ma Lian-Ti, CAT pilot Edward Norwish, and others, or aircraft incidents, like Walker landing a Fairchild C-123K Provider with hydraulic problems. Some investigations were conducted by Fred Walker. Further topics are airport facilities or landing strips, as well as events such as the celebration of the Meo or Hmong New Year, delivery of goods to the Hmong, and locations throughout Southeast Asia. There are only a few pictures about Walker himself and Gen. Vang Pao. Some of the pictures regarding aircraft crashes are very graphic in nature depicting mortal remains and might be disturbing to some viewers. Discretion is advised. The negatives show people, runway, village, and Curtiss C-46 Commando B-817 in Samnena, Laos, 1961.

For those researching ethnology the images about the traditional costumes of the Hmong people and dances and chants during the New Year’s celebration and the aerial views of their villages are of particular interest. However, the latter unfortunately lack any kind of metadata regarding their exact geographical location or identification of individuals. The same counts for aerial views of other locations throughout Southeast Asia and a visit of business people inspecting the Air America base in Vientiane.

Subseries 2. includes fifteen VHS video tapes which mainly document CAT and Air America in the media, and some which cover the war in Laos and Vietnam. Two videos are about the Air America Reunion. One tape is labeled as DHC-4A Caribou at Pha Khao, Laos showing Walker and Don Schwabel, camera by Ed Eckholdt from 1963. Important is Item No. 1, a two part coverage about Cambodia and the Killing Fields from the TV series 20/20, Item No. 8 about the impact of the media on the Vietnam War and Item No. 10 about Laos’ forgotten war.

Subseries 3. only contains an 8” long film strip depicting an unidentified mountainous terrain and a view inside a cockpit.
