Scope and Content

This collection contains manuals, course materials, sign-in sheets, clippings, memoranda, inter-office routing slips, and notes that were created or collected by Grant Walters during his career with Air America as a Flight Instructor. The Grant Walters Collection is housed in one manuscript box totaling 0.4 linear feet.

This collection arrived in one accession and in fair condition. The archivist identified four series with the first series being the Manuals Series containing a PC-6/C-H2 Heli-Porter flight manual.

The second series is the Training Course Series covering Pilatus Porter PC-6C trainings material such as Syllabus of Instruction, Lesson Plan, Examination, Study outline of Garrett Engine, PC-6/C-H2 Heli-Porter Flight Manual, Directed Study Program, and an Information Booklet The Nickel Cadmium Battery Related to Small Turboprop Aircraft Installations. The researcher will also find the same type of materials for a VNAF Pilot's PC-6 Transition Training Course Phase I in an eight hour, a sixteen hour, and a twenty-four hour version. The eight hour version also contains drafts and annotations, a Garrett Engine test and its key. A memorandum from December 2, 1971 authorizes Mr. Grant Walters to conduct classroom training for Porter and Garrett engine ground instruction for pilots. Of interest is the syllabus of instruction for Fairchild AU-23A Peacemaker (Armed Pilatus Turbo-Porter) including notes and annotations as well as for Fairchild C-123K Provider for pilots and mechanics. The fourth topic in this series discusses the Honeywell TPE331 turboprop engine manufactured by Garrett AirResearch.

The third series is the Tests Series including a Mechanical Comprehension Test manual, a Test of Mechanical Comprehension with test scores and key, an English Language Comprehension Test reading sample, test scores, notes, Part I of the English Language Comprehension Test (Basic and Technical), answer sheet and master key, a Purdue Non-Language Comprehension Test with instruction sheet for administrators, Operation Training Answer sheet, master key, and a test in English and Chinese.

The fourth Series is the Ground School Records Series encompassing the sign-in sheets of the Ground Crew Training Program stating the date, time instructor, subject student's name, and signature as well as grades. A clipping describes the missions and tasks conducted by Air America. A memorandum voices Dan Kosteff's opinion about Grant Walter's classes.
