Historical Sketch

The collapse of the Axis Forces after the Second World War leaving the United States and the Soviet Union the remaining super powers marked the beginning of the Cold War. The first conflict that put the two countries to a test was the Berlin Blockade from June 24, 1948 through May 12, 1949.

Germany was divided into four sectors each being governed by one of the Allies: the United States, the Soviet Union, Great Britain, and France. Since the city of Berlin represented a special status, because it was located in the heart of the Soviet governed sector, it too was separated into four sectors and governed by the Allies. At first there was no stringent ruling regarding which of the Allies would govern a particular sector of the city, nor a stipulation concerning the transport routes to and from Berlin.

The event directly leading to the Berlin Blockade occurred when the representative of the Soviet Union left the Allied Kommandatura at the London 6-Power Conference on June 16, 1948 out of protest, during the discussion of the development of an economically stable and federally governed Germany that further included the introduction of a new currency in the Trizone (namely the British, American, and French occupied zones).

The Soviet Union intended to keep the “old” Reichsmark thus keeping the German economy weak by only allowing the Soviet currency in their own sector, should the western Allies introduce the Deutsche Mark (DM) without the former’s consent. However, the Allies issued the DM in their sectors on June 21, 1948. The Soviet Union considered this an act of provocation and closed all land routes to and from Berlin. Overnight, the more than two million inhabitants of Berlin were without any energy and all traffic had stopped at once. The Allies, under the leadership of the United States and the command of General Lucius D. Clay, then Military Governor of Germany, used the three air corridors – each twenty miles wide - leading through the Soviet Sector to Berlin that had been negotiated in the later part of 1945, to support the citizens of Berlin. On June 29 1948, the United States Air Force Europe (USAFE) formed the Berlin Airlift Task Force and on July 7, the first Douglas C-54 Skymaster flew a load of coal stored in duffel bags for industrial use to the besieged city. Operation Vittles was officially under way. While the USAFE mainly launched their airplanes from Rhein/Main Air Base (largely Douglas C-54 Skymasters) and Wiesbaden Air Base respectively, the Royal Air Force (RAF) used Celle and Faßberg as airports to fly to Tempelhof Air Base in Berlin, Tegel Airfield in the French Sector, and Gatow in the British Sector.

In an unprecedented combined Allied effort and under the command of General William H. Tunner, who reorganized the initial endeavors by staggering the airspace in the corridors so that the airplanes were flying three minutes apart from 4,000 to 6,000 feet, more than 1,000,000 tons of goods were flown to support the city.

To fame came pilot Gail Halvorsen, who had visited Berlin in his spare time and had given candy to children standing at the end of the runway of Tempelhof who observed the unloading of the airplanes. Halvorsen promised the children that he would return the next day to drop off some more candy. As a sign to the children, Halvorsen would “wiggle” the wings of his airplane. The following day, Halvorson dropped the candy attached to a handkerchief and Operation Little Vittles was born. The children named Halvorsen either Mr. Wiggle, Rosinenbomber (Raisin bomber), or Schokoladenbomber (chocolate bomber).

By May 12, 1949, the Soviet Union came to the conclusion that their original plan to deprive the divided city of all goods had failed. The Berlin Airlift operated by the Allies proved to be so successful that a continuation of the blockade would have been futile. On August 27 the last mission was flown by the 313th Troop Carrier Group at Faßberg RAF Station. On September 39, 1949 the last Douglas C-54 Skymaster left Rhein/Main Air for Berlin ending Operation Vittles four weeks ahead of schedule.

The Berlin Airlift Veterans Association (BAVA) was formed under the laws of Pennsylvania as a not-for-profit organization in January of 1991. The main purposes of the BAVA are to commemorate the services rendered by the participants of the Berlin Airlift both military and civilian, to perpetuate the history and significance of the Berlin Airlift, to honor those who gave their lives, and to establish programs that will enhance Education, Friendship, and Understanding between people, among other things. Founding president was Col. Kenneth Herman USAF, (Ret.) who flew 190 missions on the Berlin Airlift for which he received the Occupation Medal with Airlift Device.

The organ of the association is The Legacy a quarterly publication announcing the annual reunions and other membership business.

Each year the association meets in various cities in the United States and every four to five years in Berlin, Germany to celebrate the anniversary of the Berlin Airlift.

Various members of the organization give talks and presentations to the general public, especially to grade school students. They also give interviews for television and radio shows, talking about the events and their personal experiences, as well as participating in oral history projects.

Among many others, two major projects were supported by BAVA: Operation Remembrance which tried to locate all American soldiers who had participated in and given their life during the Airlift by providing a memorial service to the descendants and commissioning a replica of the Berlin Airlift Memorial to be placed at the National Museum of the United States Air Force at Dayton, Ohio.

There are currently more than four hundred-and-fifty members registered in the Berlin Airlift Veterans Association.
