Biographical Sketch

Alexander Edward "Ed" Ferko was born on November 20, 1926 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. When he was ten years old, his family moved to Salem, Ohio, where he lived his entire life.

He graduated from high school at the age of seventeen and shortly thereafter, he applied for the Army Air Corps. However, he was not accepted because of a visual problem. Because of that, he successfully applied for the U.S. Navy. during World War II, the served in the Pacific Theater on the U.S.S. Dobbin.

In June 1946, he was honorably discharged from the Navy. He and his wife Trudy settled in Salem, Ohio, where he worked for a major food chain. The couple did not have any children.

Ferko had many interests such as hunting, building airplane models, chess playing. He was a veracious collector, but his true passion was aviation.

As a young boy, Ferko favoured aeronautical magazines. He was an avid reader, and his broad interest led him to research not only World War I, which was his main focus, but also the Spanish Civil War, World War II, and the Korean War.

Ferko was an autodidact, teaching himself the German language and even to read Sütterlin, the old German script.

Ed Ferko was a member of the Cross and Cockade Society, The American Air Historical Society, and the Air Force Historical Foundation. He was in contact with many authors in Europe and conducted extensive correspondence with them. Ferko was able to contact many surviving World War I and II Aces, who were willing to provide information as well as many memorabilia, photographs, and correspondence.

Ferko published several books about Freiherr Manfred von Richthofen, the Red Baron and many articles for the Cross and Cockade Society Journal.
