Qualifications

Before applying, please check if you meet the qualifications to be considered for acceptance to the Program.

Among the nine men and nine women who will make up the program’s 2009 class, there are six valedictorians and one salutatorian, and the group hails from the top 2 percent of their respective high school classes.  The 18 — from Arkansas, Indiana, Louisiana, New Jersey and Texas — averaged 2230 on the three-part SAT.

Students who have the best chance of being invited to McDermott Finalists’ Weekend will have:

  • 1400 or higher on the two part SAT (verbal and math);
  • 2100 or higher on the three part SAT;
  • 32 or higher on the ACT;
  • A class rank in the top five percent of their graduating class;
  • Long records of community volunteerism and leadership in school;
  • Broad and eclectic interests in science, literature, and the arts; and
  • Social skills to interact easily with adults as well as peers.

The Program welcomes all majors.

Applications are accepted from across Texas, the U.S., and the world.

DID YOU KNOW?

In the spring of 2005, McDermott Scholars Sophie Rutenbar and Kassandra McLean became UTD's first-ever Truman Scholar and Goldwater Scholar.

 

In the spring of 2008, McDermott Scholar Rachel Markowitz became UTD's first-ever Fulbright Fellow.
