Cultural Significance

Cinco de Mayo (Or May 5th) is the day that the Mexican army won the battle of Puebla against the French invaders in 1862. At the time, the French army was the strongest army in the world and it was unbelievable that Mexico’s army comprised of soldiers and farmers could win the battle.

This day does not mark the Independence Day of Mexico, which falls on September 16.
