Chess Team Holds 5th Annual DISD Tournament
UT Dallas chess team members and officials lent their time and knowledge to the fifth annual DISD High School Chess Championship, which the university sponsored over the weekend at W.T. White High School.
The tournament drew more than 100 players from 10 high schools: Bryan Adams, Conrad, Hillcrest, Lincoln, North Dallas, Samuell, Skyline, Sunset, Townview and White.
The individual tournament winner was Eduardo Ramos from Skyline. Townview won the team first-place trophy. Skyline took second place, and North Dallas placed third.
Luis Salinas, the assistant UT Dallas chess program director, was the chief tournament director. He was assisted by grandmaster Magesh Panchanathan; international masters Jacek Stopa, Marko Zivanic and Sal Bercys; and national masters Francisco Guadalupe and Tautvydas Vedrickas of the UT Dallas team.
Ramos was awarded a four-year Academic Excellence Distinction Scholarship to UT Dallas by Dr. J. Michael Coleman, the dean of undergraduate education, . This scholarship covers tuition and fees through eight semesters of enrollment.
As is the case for all Academic Excellence Scholarships, students must meet the UT Dallas entrance requirements at the time they apply for admission. It will be worth over $45,000.
